For those of you who regularly buy material, have you ever gotten a better deal than you should’ve, due to the seller not knowing the materials worth or mislabeling it for something else? I don’t personally buy much material, however.. I like to browse eBay and see what others are selling. I’ve regularly seen material mislabeled. Just saw a slab of Robinson ranch plume labeled as Woodward. Curious what steals people have gotten due to this.

I'm not sure this will count, but it's the closest I've gotten to a steal... The Rock Shed had a large chunk of Tabu Tabu Jasper in their "Miscellaneous Bin" st $3 a pound. It was a nice piece with Hematite running through it. It just jumped into my basket oddly enough! I'm about to work on some cabs from it sometime this week...  |

I myself mislabeled Royal Sahara Jasper, and it was almost a year later until I realized it. Now when I don't know what something is I hold it till I do

I got a nice big slab of guadalupe jasper labeled as oj. I guess they thought it was crappy OJ and priced it low. It was a steal!

Got a really awesome block of an unknown (probably Mexican) plume agate from a dollar a pound pile at a rock yard one time. Also scored some awesome chapenite from the same pile. Same place yielded an incredible hunk of Edison Palm root for I think, $4 per pound which was a steal for an extinct material. Another rock yard I went to here in Texas yielded incredible palm, shrinkwood, and other exotic tropical woods from their dollar piles. Cooks Peak carnelian, same place for just a bit more. Bought an entire yard full of rock one time and found a pile of Owlhead Mtns plume and sagenite plus a couple hundred pounds of t-eggs and a pile of good rhodonite and various Mohave Desert agates. $300 for the whole lot.
I know small potatoes compared to Brians scores or that of a buddy of mine who scored enormous poppy jasper and Stone Canyon boulders for peanuts.

Yes, I have gotten many deals from people who do not know what they have or just mislabeled it.
All of these were in person.

Nothing significant. The only mislabeling is usually Biggs/Deschutes. Most of my bargains are from my approach to buying. When I buy slabs or small rough I look for small patterns instead of the pattern of the entire slab. A pattern only needs to big enough to make a cab.

I have only seen the opposite, especially regarding items marked "silver". Some people sell ore slices from rocks that Sheldon or I would leave at the mine.

I got in a bid war with Tim Fisher for some "Bruneau" that seemed unique couple years ago, I got one out of the 3 pieces. After the auction I asked why he paid so much for "Bruneau", he said because it's Jakes place Morrisonite, not Bruneau.
15 dollar "yard rock and tumble" bucket at a sale with a over 3# howardite chunk.
Green jasper that turns out to be jade.

I was in a tourist trap in SC and noticed a basket with rocks. One large piece I told my wife I thought it was coprolite. It was and they sold it to me for less than $10 and it weighed between 10 and 15 lbs.
