Nice! Yeah, I love stefoinite. I never thought of leaving an edge, though. For some reason "live edge" to me always means crystals. Well maybe I'm confusing what I always called "natural edge" with something else? jasoninsd I've never actually heard of or used the term "live edge" until now so if I'm screwing this up please nip it in the butt. That being said, this piece did have crystals encrusted around the rind and there are still a couple of them on the cabochon that didn't get knocked loose. One of them is visible around the 1 oclock position in the photo. Nah, you're good. It was just what I had stuck in my own mind.

I don't know where I picked up the term "live edge"...but in my mind it simply means "not worked"...meaning in it's natural state. So, freeformed with regards to the shape at some point along the perimeter of the cab, because you wouldn't be shaping it in that spot...or in some cases the entire perimeter. I know...clear as mud right?

The theme made perfect sense to me. I equate live edge to woodworking. Anything with a live edge means that the natural curves of the wood were not sawed straight/smooth. A life edge may or may not have some bark on it. Live edge wood pieces often have some sanding done to the edges.

I've made very few cabs with a natural edge. I had never seen druse on Blue Mountain Jasper so I had to include it when I made the cab.

jasoninsdA good while ago you and I were talking about live edge wood tables and drawing comparisons with pet wood -- or something like that. Starting with that conversation, I think we both started using it as a lapidary term. Maybe "natural edge" is a more common description, although I like the "live edge" terminology (as long as everyone understands that contest theme).

TommyPerhaps we should change the wording to "natural edge" rather than "live edge"...of course it won't change anything other than the wording. Maybe that would be less confusing. In all fairness, I've never seen a "live" rock...other than The Thing...and I don't think he wants to get cabbed! LOL

I’ve seen it crop up periodically after I posted a cab where I left an edge and referred to it as “for the lack of a better term, what wood workers would call live edge” or something to that effect. holajonathan you clearly don’t spend much time with new agers, who would tell you that rocks are very much alive

OK, I am way to sick right now. Was very impressed with the green blobular areas of the slabs. Then realized it was dop wax! Hahaha thanks for clearing that up. I was thinking it was "green skin" agate (yes that's a thing) Every now and then my blond birthright rises up and takes control of the brain control levers.

I know I'm a newbie wanted to put in my 2 cents... I've seen it both ways as live edge and natural so I think you're ok.

Nice jasoninsd !!! The second entry for the month. That's really cool looking. Nice material and cab. Good job. Thanks Perk! It was really a fun one to do because I wasn't sure if it was going to hold together (it's more solid than I thought it was going to be)...and the more I ground the dome, the cooler it started looking (to me).

Now, I understand the challenge. Make a perfect oval cab and then drop it on a concrete floor for a new natural edge....LOL This is such an interesting challenge. The bar is already set very high with all of the excellent entries. Still, I went outside today to cut some rocks and dance between the snowflakes. I have an idea to try, just for fun. If nothing else, I will learn something.
