Thank you — yes, it's from Washington. It's from a 2020 rough purchase from roy. Less than half of it remains, but I will post a couple of cabs in the next week or two. Sweet material.

This is my second wood cab for this contest. The first was finished and ready for the camera when a little careless handling by doofus resulted in two pieces. After my foul mood finally dissipated, I started fresh from the same Opalized Wood — and here's the result:
OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU NAILED THAT ONE

I was thinking I had posted these the other day...but I couldn't get my pics to upload. Here's some petrified wood I got from stephan awhile back. He said he believed it was from Oregon. The entry cab is from the third slab from the left (top stencil) and is the top right one in the preforms picture...

jasoninsd it's about time you showed up. That's a good one fella. Thanks my friend! You know...I've had that done since the 18th...but wasn't sure if I was going to submit it or not. LOL - I couldn't find any better material, so that's what I went with.

So as I posted earlier, I decided to go with this piece of Yellowstone River wood. When I whacked the ends off it was mostly black inside so I turned it parallel to the blade and trimmed off a slice of the rind. I love a good rind cut but this exceeded my expectations as I actually hit an area of transparent agate just below the surface. My only wish is that I could have photographed it well enough to show it as it actually looks in person. The black inside has a really cool almost herringbone pattern that reminds me of a burnt timber if you know what I mean. This pattern translated into the cabochon but it's not quite as easy to see. The preform. Again, I wish the transparent agate area right in the center of the dome was able to be seen. It looks very cool in person. The cab turned out large and thick - maybe thicker than most cabs I've ever done but I wasn't willing to sacrifice the dome height one little bit and risk losing the agate so it's got a mongo-thick girdle. I've been neglecting this thread out of guilt for not completing my submission yet. YOUR CAB IS AMAZING. (First time I've used all caps for emphasis -- that's how strongly I feel about it .) It perfectly captures the character of old wood: simply a very attractive and very woody cab.

realrockhound Here ya go! I phot4ographed the original photo of the cabs on a slab of Golden Oak to show more of what the material looks like, I had thought about doing in on just black like these. That may be the most realistic looking (most "woody") pet wood I have ever seen. I am very familiar with white oak firewood and lumber. Your cabs could easily pass for being made of white oak wood and not pet wood. Great job! (I expected no less from the "woodman").

Beautiful, Gary. Very realistic wood grain in that one, and the dome shape (last photo) is oh-so-nice. I love it!

After you get the cab made, throw it in some bleach! should bring out the growth rings. This really did work This end cap was almost completely black inside and now look at it. I have the cabochon soaking in bleach now but I'm not going to reveal it before the contest is over. I'm loving the result but it feels a bit like cheating to me
