Whoever came up with the square theme did well. So many awesome submissions coming forward this month I agree! Sadly I will not have an entry this time. I just ran out of time :? You've got 13 hours left!

holajonathan - That is a super looking piece of Ohio Flint my friend...and a great job on the rectangular shape! Thanks, Jason. I struggled mightily to get a photo where the sides looks straight (which they are). Either the light or distortion of the cell phone camera make one or more sides look a little bowed no matter how I positioned it.

jasoninsdMy problem is with so-called barrel distortion, like this: It is very subtle in my cab photo, but I can see it, can't you?

I definitely was seeing the distortion in the picture you posted and the ones you sent me. It could either be Barrel Distortion, or the Ponzo Illusion (train track illusion).

What kind of camera do you have? PS and PS Elements have plug ins to correct certain cameras of such things. (pretty sure)
I only noticed after you pointed it out. It's extremely slight.

The distortion thing threw me off with my cab. I put it in the square after and all 4 sides were square. Looking at it from different angles makes it look crooked as all hell haha.

These photos were just taken with my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy s10+). I am familiar with what you're talking about in photoshop. It has profiles set up for certain specific lenses (mostly Nikon and Canon, I think) and you can auto correct images based on known distortions caused by those lenses. It's a cool feature that I have used. My phone has 3 rear facing cameras. The zoom one (labeled as 2X on the camera app) produces less distortion, and that's the one I used. It is slight, but it still bothered me a little since I tried hard to keep the sides and corners very square.

Iām new to this distortion idea.
Has anyone used it to their advantage? Used in on purpose?

jasoninsd My problem is with so-called barrel distortion, like this: It is very subtle in my cab photo, but I can see it, can't you? I definitely was seeing the distortion in the picture you posted and the ones you sent me. It could either be Barrel Distortion, or the Ponzo Illusion (train track illusion). So that is an optical illusion that has to do with the angled lines creating the perception of distance/depth, which distorts our brains' ability to accurately evaluate size. We expect closer objects to appear larger, and far away objects to appear smaller. When a near and far object appear to be the same size, our brain interprets the far away one as actually being bigger. I don't think my cab photo is an optical illusion. If I hold up a straight edge to the computer screen, the lines edges of the cab actually bulge a little. The distortion is in the photo itself -- caused by the lens -- and not being created by my brain. Now I'm going to try really hard to not spend the next hour looking at optical illusions.

You've got 13 hours left! A whole lot of work and a little bit of play caught up with me this month. Has nothing to do with me putting it off till the end of the month because most of my squares turn into rcr's, I swear

Iām new to this distortion idea. Has anyone used it to their advantage? Used in on purpose? Most camera lenses create either pincushion or barrel distortion. Some lenses distort very little, others quite a bit. With a zoom lens, the distortion changes as you zoom. At one extreme (zoomed all the way out), there is often some barrel distortion. At the other extreme (zoomed all the way in) there is usually some pincushion distortion. There is a lot of physics behind why that is the case -- dealing with how light is bent when it passes through a lens. But the bottom line is that it expensive and difficult to make camera lenses without distortion, especially zoom lenses. You usually don't notice the distortion unless you photograph a square or a grid and discover that the straight lines don't look straight. I can't think of any good way to take advantage of this. Ideally you want a camera + lens to take photos with as little distortion as possible. If you want to distort the image for some reason, you can do that later with photo editing software. It's better to edit an accurate (distortion free) image and create the distortion exactly as you want it, than to rely on lens distortion to create a certain effect. I hope that makes at least a little bit of sense.

Iām new to this distortion idea. Has anyone used it to their advantage? Used in on purpose? I don't know about pictures, but in a video an interesting effect can be created by moving forward quickly at the same time as zooming out.
