Some of the lichens and mosses there are more spectacular than the flowers. There's loads of quartz and slate all over the area.

Another great contest has come to a close. I love the amount of uncommon materials that we don't see every day were chosen for contest entries. Good luck everyone!

Good luck you all! I can't wait to start in on the next contest! I'm in a string of 14 hour work days but I see daylight ahead on Wednesday to get the new contest rolling. No spoilers but I'll just say that I have a soft spot for the material that has been chosen ...

I've got a bad cold right now, so I probably won't be working on rocks for a little while.

I am not sure I agree with the diagnosis of aventurine on cab #4. It has a very different color more of an aqua and texture more like mtorolite. It is a very striking stone because of the leaf and the color. Well done!!! I would like to know where this stone came from. and yes I have been wrong before.

You got me curious, as I never heard of mtorolite.
How could a person tell 2 rocks apart , when the color is similar AND the mohs and specific gravity are close or the same?
Gemdat.org says:
SG- 2.64 - 2.69
SG 2.55 - 2.70
Now I have a LOT to learn about ID'ing rocks BUT without a degree in science, I don't know how anyone could tell them apart, as there are variations in colors in both of them that match.
It looks like a toss up to me, I don't know how you would know.
Although I think it would be more likely to be Adventurine, as it's more common.

Aventurine should have some sparkles, right?

You're right, rockjunquieAventure does indeed contain sparkles , at least stones that I thought were aventurine.
Inclusions - according to Gemdat.org- are another factor to consider for ID'ing.
Inclusions in Chrome-Chalcedony May contain tiny black chromite inclusions
Inclusions in Aventurine Aventurescence caused by platy inclusions of green mica (fuchsite)

So, yours seems to me, by the pictures, to include sparkles. That would make it aventurine. Looks like aventurine to me. It's beautiful, BTW. Really talented cabbing.

I got the slab from the old guy at the local rock show back in March.
Arnie, could have had almost anything, I just figured it was aventurine, mainly because I never heard of mtorolite .

I don't think it makes any difference to say who it was made by. They were all posted by their creators right here just a couple of days ago. They weren't anonymous until the competition started. My memory is terrible but it's not that bad!

My memory is terrible but it's not that bad! Your point is well taken and I get it and I'm also not worried about it, but just for some additional insight - when the thread is made into a global announcement that appears above all of the boards, it picks up a lot of new eyeballs (and votes) that don't participate in the thread. We know this because I used to leave the voting thread in the Competitions board it would pick up around 20-25 votes. After I started making it an announcement it pretty much doubled - the 45 to 60 votes is typical I think. So my point is, imperfect as it is, there is at least some level of anonymity in the voting process.
