Egyptian Gerzean ripple flaked knife. Most people have never seen or heard of them before. These ceremonial knife blades were first knapped by skilled craftsmen then both sides were ground down until the blade was very thin. After that, one of the flat sides was flaked again but the other ground side left untouched. Many of these that have been found have come from burials and almost all of them have been killed (broken). Photos and info on these large Predynastic Egypt (5,400 to 5,150 years ago) knives. www.lithiccastinglab.com/cast-page/2002maygerzean.htm

rickb I'll bet you can duplicate it. What kind of material would you use? Did the Egyptians heat treat these?

I can't imagine the amount of time in patience it took to make that.

At my age, arthritis limits what I am able to accomplish flint knapping. I haven't seen any info as to whether their skilled craftsmen heat treated flint or not when making the knives but I don't know why they wouldn't. Here's another link to Lithic Castings that shows a wide variety of the Gerzean Knives that have been found. Many types of flint were used. www.lithiccastinglab.com/gallery-pages/2012septemberpredynasticknivespage1.htm

RWA3006 not a Gerzean knife, but a larger blade I made with a fairly nice flaking pattern and side notches. Rainbow obsidian.
