jamesp - Quite possibly the first member in Forum history to post pictures of 3 such widely varied projects in 24 hours!! And have time to ruminate on mysterious geologic formations!!! Keep em coming!!! Trust me, it isn't what it appears. Was too busy ruminating to post or socialize recently Henry. The projects have all been WIP's over a period of time and finally got posted today. Worked all day Sat, slept all day Sunday. Just stepped outside at 1pm to start work day today. see - LOTS of goofing off. You would probably work me into the dirt my friend. I do have a particularly physical job to do today a half day, building a large hard wood fire to anneal 1100 pounds of steel strips to soften them so they can be bent into rings for fire pit skirts. Today is firewood cutting/gathering/piling. May set the fire tomorrow. in the past 2 hours: broke the pull rope on the chainsaw changed the just broken belts on the dang Vibrasonic found my ATV has a bad starter motor, wife fussing cause i am using hers had to print EBAY expenditures and bank statements for wife doing taxes got stuck with a trailer full of firewood behind the ATV piled a large layer of firewood on top of the steel most of those were one step forward and two steps backward this is the anneal job on the steel, a WIP for today if things will stop breaking

I'm lucky I only have one thing butte its broke more rock power to ya jamesp! Less is better Ed. Minimalist live the happy life. Practicing an iron funeral pyre today as the next may be my own. Fingers crossed the anneal travels the whole gamut. A cold spot would be the end of the circle.

Allright, who had "annealing steel on a cut log pyre"?, as his next activity? I was thinking this morning that I need to get out and build a pyre to anneal my steel but I've got a bit of a head cold so instead I called in sick and have spent the afternoon crying like a toddler

The Prye. A series of calamities. first let it be known the chainsaws don't like cutting rock hard dry oak the big saw's pull cord broke after the first load the small saw hit a rock and dulled my last hardwood chain had I bought a sample of the steel and tested it first the pyre could be avoided and an alternate supplier would have had annealed stock mohs Glad to hear you have slowed to smell the roses. Seems time is what you make of it. Each year passes it gets more valuable. HankRocks Ya do what you got to do. Had I tested the steel first the pyre would not be the next activity. No one to blame but I. Tommy Sickness and self-employment don't always go hand in hand. Especially if making stupid decisions. Perhaps an aging mind is the culprit... @blockhead Dry oak burns tremendously hot and slow. Of course it is very dense. Poplars, gums, willows, pines, sourwoods, others are colder burning woods. Being such a thick chunk of steel a lot of heat will be required. Even after the piles has burned to the ground the coals will be fed with yet more oak piled on top. Samples will be pulled from the middle of the stack, slowly cooled and tested for anneal.

Does that mean no comment? You know me Tela, Man of many words. However Renaissance Man would be a highly overrated title. I bet you type briskly with all fingers and thumbs, imagine life typing with one finger, sometimes two. I'm fairly coordinated but why such a tard when typing ?

Dude, I took typing 3 times to try to learn it and never did. I am strictly hunt and peck. Can't touch type to save my life.
