Here's your pictures: Thank You. I can't get this thing to work with photos. This was my first trip ever and just picked a hole that someone else had started and dug in the same spot for about 6 hours and found lots of good stuff. Love pet wood. Fine material you have out there. There must be millions of pounds of this stuff up on that mountain as this was first spot that I picked and there are holes and pits all over the place, and never left 3' wide hole. |

Might be good to remember pard, that there is a 25# plus one piece per day, 250# per year, bag limit on petrified wood there. Saddle Mtn is BLM land I think.

Thanks, I did not know this I probably was close to being over the daily limit but way under the yearly limit. I only plan on one more trip this spring before it gets too hot over there, so I am sure that I will be way under the yearly limit's and I am bringing a digging partner. The next trip will be mostly searching out limb cast's.

Sorry, I was mainly looking at the line of huge hunks in your first picture which appears to be way over the day limit. Oh yeah, I should explain too, the day limit applies first. For your one-day hunt, to be legal, it would allow you only the 25 pounds plus one piece per person. The annual limit does not mean you can collect up to the 250 pound "annual" limit in one day unless the "one piece" is a big one about 225 pounds, I guess. Ie: on a five day collecting trip, you could collect a total of 100 pounds plus lets say, five big pieces with the grand total not to exceed 250 pounds. If you were to find a single piece over 250 pounds or want to collect over 250 pounds per year, a BLM permit is required. Collected material to be for personal use only and cannot legally be sold or bartered.

Like I said I didn't Know that there is a daily or yearly limit. Your first comment was very helpful informing me of this Info. and your second comment sounded more like you being a D!ck trying to state that I did something wrong? I have been rock hounding for a total of three times ever in my life. Twice on local riverbanks inside of the city and this one Petrified wood trip. I only quit digging at around 25lbs. to 30lbs. because I figured that I had enough. I still have these ten rough rocks in question in a bucket and with my professional certified scale/fingers I estimate them to be somewhere between 15 lbs. and 18 lbs. with the bucket included. If it would make you feel better about yourself you can come over and weigh them for yourself or even better yet meet me and my designated digger in two weeks at the mountain to weigh out our bounty to make sure that we are not over 100Lbs for the weekend or 500Lbs. for the year and verify if we might be trying to sneak out an extra rock in our pockets. I joined this site for the help and information and not snide comments trying to tell me I am Idiot. Thanks  |

Yep, just trying to explain how the law reads/works for a newbie. BLM rangers have been getting much more aggressive recently and fines can be quite steep. Got to admit though, that I personally have rarely seen a ranger unless I sought one out except for an encounter near Petrified Forest in AZ where the ranger actually told me where I should collect. And the only fine I know of personally, was one issued for illegal offroad camping on the Mojave Desert. I would think since Saddle Mtn is so well known though, that your chances of encountering a ranger would be much greater. Just trying to give you a heads up to help you avoid trouble. Take it however you like.

He had two main concerns, the weight of our rocks in regards to the daily limit AND he wanted to take a close look at a shotgun I reported having on board. I guess they get a lot of poaching activity up there so he wanted to make sure we were really doing what we said we were. |

A couple buddies were up there last month, they did really good on hauling some home, one buddy dug a piece up that was over 60 pounds..
