On my way home from work today (and every other day) I stopped to get my mail, fingers crossed that the grit I ordered would be in, But nothing in the mail box I was so sad, came home to a box sitting on my desk ;D It was my grit, so at 6:30 pm I started my very first batch of rocks.....they are just rocks I collected at the river and the creek by my house. I am so excited, I took some pics of the rocks I put in, but they did not turn out very well.... I read someplace to stop the tumble and check the rocks every day...is this true? If not how often do you check them (actually take a few out and look?) Please help But I am so excited about starting my new batch ;D Bunny

Hi bunny, welcome to the coolest rock place on the net.
When I first started tumbling, I checked my rocks every couple of days. Now, I just toss them in the barrel, add grit and water, put them on the tumbler and forget about them for a week, sometimes more. You do need to keep an eye on them in case the rocks you are tumbling produce gas. If you have gas buildup, you need to "burp" your barrel. I just keep an eye on the bottom of the barrel. If it looks like it is expanding, I "burp" it. If there is no indication of gas, I don't open the barrel. I tumble my rocks in Ivory and water for a couple of hours before starting them in grit. I think that helps prevent gas.

Hi Bunny Welcome to the forum!! I can so relate to your excitedment, I just started my first batch a week ago, hoping tomorrow to move it to the next step. You can look at your rocks everyday if you want, just make sure you clean the cover and lip of the tumbler really good when you reclose the barrel. A toothbrush or q-tip works great for that. Have fun!! [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow]

Things getting better and better, Just was on the phone with a member of a local (1/2 hour drive to town) rock club (100 members) sounds like a great club, so I am going to go to the next meeting to meet a bunch of rock nuts They have a shop (saws, grinders etc) for club members to use, and some great sounding programs for kids, so am hoping my kids might get into this too, I am so excited about going to that too. Hoppin Bunny now

Hello & Welcome Bunny! I know how you feel because I'm doing my first tumbling batch myself!;D I'm just at the end of the first step. It does not hurt to open the barrels daily. I've been opening them daily because of the excitement of been new to this, and to check and learn about the process. I guess after a while I will be doing this less and less. I'm also taking pictures of the whole process to learn from them and also to post and share after everything is finished. Well Bunny it's Great to have you here! Happy Tumbling! ;D

Sounds like a bunch of us just got started, including me too. Cher, I just got my 33B from Jatayu that I ordered. Thanks again for telling us about that place. Connie was extremely nice to deal with. ;D

Hi Hopping Bunny of BC,
welcome to this great place where we all keep learning and have fun as well.
I stll get excited when I start a new batch of stones. But I do not open the barrel every day anymore. I do keep a watchful eye on the barrels though . I had to burp one last week that I noticed was bulging. That is the first time since I started way back in december .
And one of my later additions to the barrelclub was leaking a bit which made a bit of a mess. I had to tighten the locking nut some more.
Enjoy
Jack
