As a relative newcomer, I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can shed some light on for me. I use a 6" flat lap machine for shaping and smoothing and was wondering why there is such a large difference in the cost of the flat lap discs. I've seen them on the internet, and I'm sure you have too, for $8, $10, and Up to around $15 bucks. Then I search some of the rock shops mentioned on this site and the discs are more expensive, like around $25.00 and up to $90.00 each. There has to be a reason for this difference. Can you enlighten me? I've been buying them mainly from Kingsley North for around $15.00 each. But, they also have them for up to around $100.00.
I've seen the same for diamond saw blades. Prices all over the map.
Can someone tell me the REAL difference in the two items, discs and blades, for the money. I sure don't mind spending more money in the beginning, if I am getting value received. I don't want to spend more money, though, if I can buy the same thing for a lot less. Is there a difference in the diamond quality, the longevity, or the cutting ability of both items?
Let me know your thoughts and what some of you are using.
Thanks,
Jim

I can't comment on laps, because the only lap I buy is a no hole end lap for the Genie. Blades are like a lot of things; name brand and generic. When I buy a larger blade for slabbing, I buy a brand name and then shop price.
I buy a lot of 8 inch trim saw blades because they are hand feed and water cooled. I was buying mk 303 blades ($51 on Amazon) and now I buy a generic ($42) because they perform as well and are cheaper. The only way to tell cheap from junk is to have a recommendation or take your chances.
