Hi folks, I have an old HP e5 10” saw. I’m working on the refurb, and noticed the arbor/bearing doesn’t seem to have a bearing - just an arbor shaft through a hole? I don’t have a lot of experience here, but that sounds like a lot of metal to metal friction. Is it safe? Do I need to grease it? Did I buy a saw with a lame arbor system? imgur.com/gallery/4tIOWiB

It would be very strange for that not to have a bearing, since you are refurbing it see if you can press the shaft out and have a look. You will need to do this anyway to check what the grease is like. Don't hammer the shaft out, if it doesn't come out easily hammering it will damage it and make it impossible to put back together. If you haven't got a press take it to an engineering shop, they will press it out for you for peanuts.

Thanks for that. I do really doubt there is any bearing in there. It really looks and feels like a shaft in a machined hole. The casing around it is welded to the top. Either way, my level of refurb is only as much as it takes to give me a healthy saw. Can I grease it without removing the shaft?
Edit: And what would I use? Thanks.

You might have an antique there with press-fit brass bushings instead of bearings. We have a +/- 70 year old saw like that.
If the bushings are so worn they're causing problems you might be able to sleeve them.

Like this? This has a bronze sleeve, old HP 6" trim saw, it's in the 1947 catalog on the cigarbox rock site, don't know how many years it was made. I think it could be pressed out and replaced, but no need so far. If yours is the same it should have a oiler somewhere like mine.

I’m not sure what that means, I don’t expect I would go through that. Is there a simple way to grease this arbor? There is no oiler that came with it.

It does have some sort of brass sleeve bearing. It looks like I don’t have the ability to add pictures in the post (maybe an account status thing?). So I’m using imgr pics: imgur.com/gallery/HRBmazw
