Has anyone found their most efficient grit series recipe using a Covington 24" Rociprolap on Agates for that top quality finish?

I also wonder if anyone has tried using mineral oil in place of water and grit on a vibratory or reciprocating lapping machine...

I also wonder if anyone has tried using mineral oil in place of water and grit on a vibratory or reciprocating lapping machine... Would not try it myself, you would have oily mess on you hands. Cleaning between grits would be a real pain. Already have 3 oily mess makers on my hand, my 3 rock saws.

Thank you for the thoughts on this! We are figuring that since the stones have been thru the saws with oil... why not grit in the light mineral oil on the reciprocating lap to eliminate the water evaporation issues from the cast iron plate ...

Thank you for the thoughts on this! We are figuring that since the stones have been thru the saws with oil... why not grit in the light mineral oil on the reciprocating lap to eliminate the water evaporation issues from the cast iron plate . My garage temp runs between 94 and 96 degrees most afternoons these days and I do not seem to have a big problem with evaporation in my Vib Lap. I do add water once or twice a day and it does not run it at night or while we are gone for more than an hour or so. Someone gave me one of the IV drip setup but I have never bothered to set it up, it's on the now famous list!!! Now maybe the grinding might go better with mineral oil, not sure I can wrap my head around that at the moment. You would still have a real big issue with clean up and the extra oily slurry.

Thanks very much again for these considerations. We are thinking that perhaps the light mineral oil may better support the grit in slurry during the process... perhaps someone has tried the oil method...

We are wondering if the mineral oil vs water has shown to help in the support of grit in the slurry...

I have a 24" reciprolap. I use 220 grit for coarse and 600 for fine. I have polished on the lap only a few times. they were meant for grinding and what was recommended at the time was neoprene with my favorite polish. I typically polished on Lortone vib lap. I use 2" masking tape around the outside bottom rim to keep splash/drips from running out and getting on the bottom track. I have never used oil water was messy enough but oil would not evaporate. It would be real messy to cleanup. Reciprolap is messy. Speaking of that I have one for sale if anyone needs one. I am trying to down size and flat lapping needs to go.
