I got an 8" all-U-need flat lap for polishing geodes and thunder eggs. It seems that geodes and thunder eggs burn through discs rather quickly.
Has anyone re-used the acrylic backing plates? If so, how did you take the old sanding disc off the plate?
Also, can you put sanding discs on both sides of the acrylic plate to extend their life/use? (eg. put a new #325 smoothing disc on the back side of my old #325 disc plate)
I would like to know about this in terms of both the electroplated diamond discs (steel), and the diamond smoothing discs.
I looked at getting some new discs, and it was quite expensive - I'm looking for a way to save some money (if possible). Any and all advice appreciated!!!

You can definitely reuse the backing plates. If you're using metal diamond disc toppers, just put them on top of the plastic backing plate and just use the screw with a washer to hold them down. If you using the smoothing discs, they are all psa, so just peel off the paper backing and stick it on.
The old smoothing discs come off pretty easy - just pull them up from the backer.
Don't use the backer as a double-sided disc. You'll ruin the disc that's facing down and most likey the machine, too.
