I bought a used wet/dry table grinder for $77 shipped. It was totally impulsive and I really hope it’ll be an easy lapidary conversion. Has anyone tried it before? The flat wheels is 8” and the side wheel is 5”

No, but it looks interesting and a bargain.
Pick up a cheap (~$100) tile saw at Home Depot and you have a great starting shop.

A fluorescent tube overhead is a great way to see scratches that still need to be ground out. Rotate the slab 90 degrees with each change to finer grit.

I think there’s different stones you can get, but I’ll adapt it to lapidary discs

Welcome To RTH
I’ve messed around w/ those sharpener flat lap grinders w/ varying degree of success for lapidary work
The rpm speed is usually slow on those machines
Attaching a diamond lap disc will work
You may have to get a bit creative with how to secure the flat lap to the spindle
anyway that interesting project and as you progress that machine will come in useful
where you located ?

Hi Ed, I’m in Southern Illinois.
I’ve been learning a bit about machinery lately as I work on building a larger rock tumbler. I think I might feel confident enough to even switch out the shaft and make some adjustments. It’ll just probably mean a hundred more times back and forth to the hardware store 😂
