Actually Ohio is, or at least was, one of the more lapidary hobbyist prevalent states east of the Mississippi River. In part due to the large source of the colorful, cabbing grade Ohio Flint in Flint Ridge, OH. I've seen lots of lapidary equipment for sale in Ohio and have traveled there a few times myself from NC to buy from old collections. Keep an eye on Craigslist and your local auction ads.

As for which size saw/saws to purchase, I have 10, 12, 14, 18, and 20 inch diameter blade slab saws and by far the 14" and 18" get the most use in my shop. The 10" and 12" get the least use. Being in the southeastern US we don't have a lot of the nice big chunks of Petrified wood, or boulders of Nephrite that are found native to the west coast states. It's too expensive to have the large stuff shipped these days, and not a lot of rough dealers are willing to transport the large materials cross-country for the rock & gem shows. So 18" to 20" is about as large of a saw as I ever have need for and they are sufficient for slabbing most of the cabbing grade agates and jaspers.

That blocky chunk of material with the blue/green band shown near the top of the first photo is Gunnery Point Picture Jasper from Arizona. The source is located on a U.S. military bombing range near Yuma. The public is not allowed to collect there anymore and hasn't been allowed to for over 50 years. A very scarce and hard to find in the rough these days. I found some in a collection a few years back and RTH members rykk and Sabre52 identified it for me.

So after some massaging, the bearing seems like it might work. Does anyone have some pictures and measurements of the baffle?

The earlier model 10" Raytech slab/trim saw didn't have a baffle. But the baffles were a needed addition to the design that helps keep the coolant from leaking out around the arbor hole. I've had a couple of the Raytech L-6S models and neither of them had baffles. I'm not sure if they were ever included on the 6" models. The 6" blades don't seem create the same need for them as the 10" saw blades did. But if you want to check, Rick Scott does still make a 6" trim saw (just not with the autofeed and hood that the older 6" models had)so he may have baffles for these newer 6" models now. It does look like old stock Confetti Agate from Chihuahua, Mexico. Used to see it pretty frequently at shows back in the 1970s but seldom see it anymore. I think I still have a couple of small slabs of it stashed around here somewhere. I've always though it was a cool looking material! Sam Silverhawk has shown some nice examples of cabs of Mexican Confetti Agate in recent years.

I've tried to post a link to the images of Silverhawk's cabs of this material but can't get it to post properly. So just do a search for "Sam Silverhawk Confetti Agate" and then click on images.

Yes it was made by STONEHOUSE in Freedom, California. It was one of the first items to sell when those lots were listed.

Have you folks ever considered doing a co-op site for selling cut stones? Once the initial costs of such a site like that being setup is completed, keeping it online shouldn't be too expensive. Keep it limited and quality controlled and I could imagine the potential to grow exposure without costly advertising could be done with properly labeled photos of cut stones that would appear in the searches for images on Google, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.. Just typing off the cuff here but it may be something to think about.

If using an enclosed saw I don't use a mask. For open saw cutting, trimming slabs, coarse grinding and polishing with oxides I use 3M 8210Plus disposable respirator masks. Up until about two months ago you could buy a box of 20 from Walmart for around $15 and have then shipped to your local Walmart store free for pick-up. And Home Depot sold them for around $19 for a box of 20. But good luck finding any on the shelves now until the Corona panic subsides.

Kunzite does not make a good stone for rings. It can't take the bumps and bangs that rings are subjected too. The cleavage plane problems and internal stresses of Kunzite limit it's practical uses and can make it difficult to set without damaging. In some cases it can even shatter on the dop stick while cutting under normal cutting and polishing circumstances. More suited for pendants, earrings and collector stones but even more so for specimens.
