Funny story on that ... it's petrified wood that I dug up. When I pulled it out of the ground it was damp and the dirt stuck to it badly and I couldn't really see what it was like. The photo was taken after I hosed off all the dirt and could see it better.
Turned out it was poor quality and not solid at all, in fact it was more like semi-petrified dirt so I set the crate out of the truck until my next trip to the area a couple months later.
I pulled up to the exact same spot I found it and tossed it back within inches of where I found it.
We have to do that to keep the earth from tipping over - like the Island of Guam nearly did several years back.

We too three loose pieces off of the top of a vertical log and reburied. Maybe someday some one will find it but I have my doubts.
Looks like you might have done this before once or twice. Curious if you run into issues commonly on the larger slabs similar to what I've encountered many times with new wood slabs as they dry out- splitting. Maybe this is not an issue because the replacement of the organic materials with the minerals occur over such a long period of time?
Anyways, glad this looks like it will be a successful save.
Naw, don't split like real wood does, but it can be brittle and will shatter pretty easy! Not my first rodeo for sure!
Was working on one of my tractors but ran out of parts so figured I may was well get started on the repair. I start by covering a scrap piece of counter top material with freezer paper, lay out parts of slab and make sure it is clean and no chips, apply the epoxy, pull together with strap clamp, remove excess epoxy and now till let it cure for a few days and then I can lap it down and start the sanding and polishing all over!
Bob, would it be practical to glue some kind of a rigid backer onto the backside, like carbon fiber, perhaps?
I have put fiberglass mat on the back of several slabs. This opalized stuff is real brittle. I should have done this one. I was alright until I dropped in on the grass too hard.

rocknrob: That had better be a good sandwich for that price, otherwise you're better off making one yourself.

rocknrob: There was a shop in Portland, don't know if it's still there called Kenny and Zukes who made the absolute best pastrami sandwiches I have ever had. The problem is every restaurant thinks their sandwich is worth $20 now and seldom makes the grade.

rocknrob: So, to end my thread on sandwiches. If you find your sandwich worthy of that price by all means keep going to that restaurant
