Hi all, I've spent most of the day preparing to take my jewlery to my backer tommorrow. I got some backings for mounting, printed stickers with my logo "Earthtones" "by Nanette", affixing them to said mountings, making stickers of the type of rock used, ect.... Tommorrow I will create a frameable, small sign with an explaination of my product, take it to the backer (a salon owner, already set up for jewlery sales) and see what happens. Wish me luck! Sandsman has been my insperation.

Cookie, I hope you have great luck and it is the beginning of much more. You have certainly worked for it. You have what it takes. I hope my venture works out. I would love to get stones from us to wire wrap, sell, and just have to display to show what can be done. When it is time, I will probably be contacting us for materials for sale. We got a very large booth at the fleamarket and we will be needing more, more, more. Of course customers are very desireable also.

"Us" would be happy to get you some stones. I think I understand that. It was Dayja vous all over again today. The person who originally wanted me to set up in her store (it took me about a month to get enough findings to finish enough stones to sell) I called to let her know I was ready to go and had to leave a message on her machine. She never called me back, so I got very discouraged. This new backer, she has told my husband twice that she'd love to do it. I have never met her. I called today (SOOO nervous) got the answering machine and left a message. No reply today. But I'm going to persue this. I'm going to call again tommorrow (I was a hair stylist for 14 years, I know the "I'm with a client, take a message" routine) and stay on it. This is going to happen. More on the morrow, cookie

What really worked for me, and got me really set on this gig and all its directions, was to go to a fleamarket, set up a table. It is really just that easy. With the artist doing the talking, selling, explaining what everything is, BAM! Consignment never worked for me, going from store front to store front never worked. A lot of my stuff is sitting even now, unpaid for, collecting dust. You have put a lot of time in your work, it really looks great, let 'em get to know you. They bring back friends. I do the freeze dried spaced out hippy gig, which is really natural to me actually, and the old stoners who sold out and hit corporate land love to remember. I make all unique stuff as I cannot remember how I made the first one. People tell me I remind them of Tommy Chong. They bring back friends. I knew Ben Keasey and we talk of the magic bus. Sometimes I think they buy my stuff as they are afraid it could have happened to them. Great luck and especially have fun. It really is fun once you break through.

WTG Cookie...you have all my support! I think your work should sell well...especially in the Helen area. Don't discount some of the trendy stores either....you DO live in near one of the better tourist towns in Georgia!
AND....I'm anxious to hit the hooch again! (though not in the water! ;D ) Will be unavailable this weekend...but maybe we can hit the hooch one more time before it gets "really" cold! (forgive me...cold in Georgia is somewhere between the 30's & 60's) Let me know if you're up to it. Found a little faster way to your place....only 1 & a half hrs away.

Thanks Doc. You know, I would really love to do that more than anything, but I have a "real" job, about 50 hours a week. It's mentaly and physicaly taxing. My husband has aspirations of my doing this full time, having my own business, ect. He's the dreamer and I'm the realist. That's what I want, guess it just depends on how bad I want it, huh? Thanks everyone , for your belief in me. It helps more than you know. I want this soooo bad. Just have to earn a living in the mean time. Doc, have you done the flea market you where talking about yet? If so, how did you do? There's tons of fleamarkets around here, and bikers love this area so they set up here alot. Most of the regular flea markets around here are just junk. This is gonna happen, I can feel it! ;D

Cookster, your real problem here is living in a small town. It is going to be hard to get exposure if you are doing this locally -- you need a lot of lookers to have a decent amount of buyers.
I've got some experience with this; I got my last "made it myself" business up and running in 1989 and it's still alive, though my interest in it has lagged ... I did a lot of arts & crafts shows early on, but living in a big metro area gives me many more opportunities than you have. I didn't do any flea markets, since around here, at least, nobody wants to pay any money for anything at flea markets. My earliest store front outlets were also salons, interestingly enough!
If there's any way you could gear towards kiddie stuff and hit some kiddie gift store type places, it could work -- this was major for me.
You're close to Atlanta, IIRC. Is there a way you could get info and apps for any Atlanta festivals, etc., that have a craft vendor area? Those are often very expensive, but you get a lot of traffic, and that's critical. You really can't tell how your stuff will do until you have a venue with a lot of traffic and people buying.
As I've gotten to know other people in the business, I've noticed that most people, like myself, have a small but very loyal clientele that provides a lot of the backbone.
Keep your ears open for people that might have places to sell your stuff for you -- like people that do home shows of stuff and might include yours, people who have kids involved in team sports, cheerleading, etc., where there are a lot of people on a regular basis -- often the mothers will sell stuff on the side. Good Luck!

You gonna ever tell what happened when I was there? Or nah?

You can tell. I don't think anyone really believes me, but you expirienced it first hand. Thanks for all thr great info, everyone. So much to do. When my camera gets here, that should help. I can make a portfolio and carry it around with me to show people what I do.

OK, here goes, When Emerald came up to go rock hunting, my husband, me and emerald were standing in the kitchen talking. Emerald had her back to stove but was about 4 feet away from it and we were facing her. There is a big pot that stays on top of the stove with the lid on it most of the time. The lid came flying off the pot and hit the ground! Emerald turned around and said "I didn't do that". My husband and I looked at each other, tring to fiqure out how to tell this person whom we had just meet that we had a little ghost problem. My husband said "Someone wants to make thier presence known" and went on to explain that his spirit guide, Patrick, hangs out with us and just wanted to say hello. I'm supised she didn't run to her car and speed away from these crazy people, but she just said "Hello, Patrick, nice to met you". Later, when we came back from hounding, Emerald set up her lap top to down load the pictures, but couldn't get the program to open. She got out her cell phone to call her son, but couldn't get a signal. She said,"Come on Patrick, help me out here" looked down at the phone and her eyes got big as saucers. She had a full signal. "It's because I shook the phone, right?" "Yeah" I winked, "It's cause you shook the Phone" All is well in the Twilight Zone. cookie

What she said is true....
Except one thing...
My eyes weren't big as saucers.... (well...maybe) *chuckles* But I was a bit dry-mouthed after that!

Hmmmm don't know what to think about the pan lid flying off but I'd be telling Patrick to pick it up himself. As far as the cellphone goes, that would depend on whether or not you had just turned it on and weren't in your "home area". I know when I turn mine on and I'm not in my "home area" it can take quite a while to get a signal because the phone is searching for the right tower system to use. A tower, B tower, depends on which service you're with and what type of service you have. Just a "possible" solution to the cell signal ... (not discounting Patrick ;D ) [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]
