All, if you have a moment can you have a read of this ipower.ning.com/netneutrality2Does anyone here have any knowledge of this? Is it "news" in the US? A hoax? True? Exaggerated? Can anyone shed any light on it for me? Should we spread the word? Mark

I believe it is a hoax, though I can't find anything about it on snopes.com.
Bell and TELUS are main phone companies here in Canada (I use TELUS), and I haven't heard anything about this at all. There was a huge fuss recently about these comanies adding a 15 cent charge for each incoming text message on cell phones (for people who don't have a phone plan that includes texting) but I haven't heard anything about internet access plans or bundling of internet sites. So I think it's bogus. -Don

BTW Mark, the article you linked to states that TELUS was formerly owned by Verizon. This is completely false. TELUS was formed from the amalgamation of two former provincial phone companies -- BCTel in British Columbia, and AGT (Alberta Government Telephones) in Alberta. TELUS then bought Clearnet to get into mobility.
So if the article has such a blatant error as to say TELUS was owned by Verizon, I think the whole thing is false. -Don

Maybe not so much bull. www.thenation.com/doc/20060213/chester from 2006 makes for very interesting reading. This article states that Verizon, Comcast, Bell South and 'other' communications giants are involved. All I did was Google the end of the internet. Amazing tha number of pages that come up all claiming to be the end of the internet.

savetheinternet.com/=faqIs the link from Sandsman above - I think someone was using the topic to make a few squids on the link which I posted - cheers edog - im off to check out the seduction link right now! Rockfromahplace - this is what I mean - theres so many pages about it (net neutrality) that it got me wondering. Rollingstone - thanks for that - a fact like that certainly helps to discredit the document - hopefully the concept aswell. Cpdad - I hope cp is correct - as you say - g****e arent my favorite SE for many reasons - they are however a prime example of how giants can get a hold and billions of people havent even noticed that one!!!

It's quite ironic. We (as the so-called free world) are highly indignant when other countries restrict access to web sites for what seems like silly restrictive reasoning...but we forget just how much our own country loves to be a "Big Brother" that knows better and hates criticism. There are certainly a lot of lies and half truths on Internet blogs and a lot of people trying to make a buck off of something that should be free (like Google and other search engines and browsers).
I have to believe this is true csroc

Hmmm - didn't the FCC just fine one of the cable companies for implementing something along those lines? They were actually charging more/limiting access to people based on the bandwidth used by the people. The FCC ruled that it was not cool, to stop doing so, and to pay a fine. I'll see if I can find the article I read about that...

I personally do not believe this will happen. First there are too many smaller sites that are making money to allow it. Also if it does happen these giant companies that are planning on making money will lose money. The people would ultimately say screw this and cancel there internet. I believe the mass cancellations would bankrupt the big companies trying to control the internet.

Wm7734: “any time big brother, big business,or big money, tries to screw the people, the "people" come up with a way to beat them, have faith in the "people" ;D You’re a funny guy, Bill. Jonje: “The people would ultimately say screw this and cancel there internet. I believe the mass cancellations would bankrupt the big companies trying to control the internet.”Yyyyuupp . . . just like they bankrupted all the cable tv companies that’ve been screwin’ ‘em since day one. I don’t see much difference between paying for GB and paying for speed. The phone company around here’s already got at least four different rates for DSL speed. Rich
