I am pretty sure to be going to Flint Ridge (Nethers Farm) on Father's Day. Cardiobill is thinking of dragging his family out as well.
Anyone else want to meet up?

If Father's Day doesn't work out due to scheduling, weather, or whatever - feel free to suggest another date on this thread...

For anyone that needs info on flint ridge (nethers farm) check this out and be sure to look at the flint ridge cabs at the bottom of the page. mcrocks.com/ftr10-1/StreeterSeptember2010.htmlChuck

Dang, Chuck. That would be a long ride. Just three hours for me so I can make it a day trip.

Come on!!!....I just did the 6 hour (one way) trip this past weekend for the Spring knap-in at the park. Didn't do Nethers, this time. Best weekend to go is Labor Day weekend - The largest knap-in in the US and probably the world. I haven't missed it in over 15 years.

Thought about a knap-in weekend Parker, but decided I didn't want to be there with a thousand other people on my first dig. But you're right, it would be a very cool event to experience.

ok guys, two questions ....
1) all of my our rock hounding to date has been surface collecting but this place looks like difficult digging and busting rock so I figure we need shovels, 8 or 10 pound sledge hammer, cold chisels, pry bar. Did I miss any required tools ??
2) If I can make it I will be bringing my boys (ages 8 and 13). Is anyone else bringing kids along?
Time flies and I did not even realize fathers day is so close already.
Thanks, Chuck

Chuck; Safety equipment: Gloves, safety glasses/goggles, even a hard hat can be good if you're in a pit with any kind of overhang or loose material above your dig. Long sleeves and long pants because of flying chips. First aid kid with lots of bandages. I always manage to cut, bark my knuckles, or smack myself almost every time I hardrock mine....Mel

I've never hounded myself, but your list sounds good. The only things I'd add are water (for drinking and cleaning rocks) and buckets for carrying your loot.
I may bring my boy (10) after I talk to his mother. He will be heading to camp that evening so it might not be possible for him to go...

I went last year with the family. First time collecting anywhere. Had a lot of fun. Stayed about an hour and a half. We just surface collected. There is a ton of smaller rocks around that are perfect for tumbling. There are a bunch of pits that people have previously dug and my understanding is that the best (most colorful) stuff is found in the deeper layers and would require hammer/ chisel/ spud bar to get at.
I will be there with at least 2 of my kids (boys 8 and 17), wife, and possibly daughter (in college). As I told Todd we are fair weather collectors and if the weather looks ugly will probably not go. Flint ridge is pretty close to me - a little more than an hour
The cell phone coverage is pretty sketchy so if you rely on your iphone for navigation you will be out of luck (at least with ATT). It was pretty easy to find though. Print up a map before you go. Look forward to it weather permitting

I like 4 inch cubes. So maybe 10-12 pounds or even bigger.
