There are some pieces laying around the pits that are prbably the size of a basketball. I try to bring home pieces that are 3 to 6 inches. It will really give your saw a workout. It is really tought stuff.

Hi Toad, Did you end of going to Flint Ridge. If so, what did you find was it worth it? I recently moved to OH and found this site on the internet. I've done a bit of hounding on the east coast and Canada, but this looks like serious business. Wondering if there is enough loose rock available that I could collect and be happy with? Or would serious pick action be necessary ?

Caryl I have been there and there is tons of loose rock just for the picking. You can chisel/ spud bar etc to try and get better stuff but al we did was pick up loose rock when we went there and there is an abundance of it. I posted some picks last year of what it loks like and you can easily see all the stuff just laying around - no pick needed forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/53271/flint-ridge-ohio-pic-heavyBill

caryl, I took my boys to flint ridge this summer and if your just looking for tumbler size pieces its unlimited just laying on the ground. I did use the pick to try to get some of my cutting size pieces from the side walls of the pits. If you need any other info just ask. Here's our trip report forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/60465/flint-ridge-trip-report-heavyChuck

Well it's only taken a month but I'm finally posting pictures. My girlfriend and I drove up and spent a few hours. We are both rank amateurs so we stayed at the first pit and did not dig very deep... but were thrilled with our finds! Tons of color, everywhere we looked was a different beautiful colored group of rock. And crystals everywhere. How exciting you know us women love shiny objects! Total we got about 40 lbs. am so excited, just got my tumbler out of storage can't wait to get to get tumbling! Here's some pics:

I am a novice as well and I loved how easy it was to collect at the farm. We pretty much stayed in the first pit as well. Glad you had a great time and it looks like a great haul. They will tumble great

Would love to get some cut but am new to the area and don't know anyone here in NW Ohio. By any chance do any of you? caryl
ps: Forgot to mention that Mrs. Nethers was the sweetest lady you can tell she takes great pride in running the farm.

It comes in pieces as big as you care to get out. The best is amazingly colorful, and takes a killer polish. Very hard and slow to slab. Fracturing can be a problem.
