I thought I had some nice reds up here. Hah, compared to those mine don't even register on the scale. Those are truly some gorgeous pieces of this planet. Jim

Why don't you rub salt in our open wound Mel! Yep, those were the good old days when the pickin was good. Think there's 38 million people in CA now and 30 million of them are rock hounds. Rest dump their trash out in the desert. Really like the first one.

Larry, Yeah I know what you mean but most the stuff in the South Cady's/ Lavic section section is actually pretty new material collected just before I moved to Texas about five years ago. The North Cady's stuff I pictured is older. The orbicular slab I bought but I have similar rough self collected and all the North Cady's stuff is from the gravel beds at the mouth of Afton Canyon off Basin Road. Hit it right after a flash flood one time and found a huge amount of agate exposed right on the surface.....Mel

Cool stuff, Mel. Now where's the cabs?? Looks like you've got some red speckled stuff, too (pic 7). Thanks for posting.

Yeah, yeah *L* I love hunting rocks, tolerate slabbing rocks, and hate cabbing rocks. Which is why the bulk of my collection is type slabs. I hunted the Cady's probably 50 years and have maybe ten cabs from there and most those are plume *L*. I'm coming to the realization that with my horse and gun addiction, I'd best start selling off some of my larger rough, as heck, I'm in my late 60's and will never cut up all that big stuff especially since now I only have a ten inch saw. On top of that I must have many hundreds, if not thousands of slabs. When one is in their twenties, it seems like you have all the time in the world for collecting and cabbing. Then the clock starts running out and you have to go and get all old and crap like that *L* .....Mel

I'm in my late 70's and want more rocks, but don't know what I'll ever do with what I have. It reminds me of the old joke about The pilot who's engine unfortunately quit. Fortunately he had a parachute. Unfortunately it didn't open. Fortunately there was a haystack way down there. Unfortunately there was a pitchfork in it. Fortunately he missed the pitchfork. Unfortunately he also missed the haystack. I love dragging rocks home. Unfortunately the wife doesn't like the piles. I love slabbing. Unfortunately I hate mucking the saw. I love cabbing. Unfortunately I don't have the time and it is dwindling faster and faster. Notice how every other day is a Saturday anymore? I love making jewelry but the price of silver and gold makes my eyes bug out! And I hate selling anything! Well, soon it will be the kids problem and they don't have a clue about any of it. Dave

Dave *L* I don't have kids and my wife is gonna be pissed off if all my rocks become "her" problem *L*. Someone is gonna get a small fortune's worth of rock for a very cheap price if I die before she does *L*. I can just hear her saying " Get this crap out of my yard!" Hell Dave, I can hardly keep track of the days anymore. If it weren't for having regular gym days, favorite TV programs or horse days, I'd be clueless as to what day it is *L*. I'm with you too, I especially flat out hate selling my cabs or favorite slabs....Mel

Mel, Dave, we're all heading down that road, and quicker than we'd like! You've both got a few years on me, but already I can't seem to find (make?) the time to get out there and cab rocks as much as I'd like.
I don't have kids (baby shit yellow - what's that? lol!), either, and no one else in the family is "into" rocks. Like Mel said, someone's gonna get a great deal when I go, too. Maybe I need to cultivate friendships with some younger rockhounds now? Who's my buddy?!

rockpicker: I was lucky when I moved to Texas. Had to clean the rock from my yard and ole Lowell ( elementary) who is much younger than I, was nice enough to help me out and haul off a lot of my rough I had accumulated. Unfortunately though, the piles have again grown since our Texas move and I'm already looking forward to my next pet wood hunt *L*......Mel

Mel, it doesn't matter how much rock you already have, you still need more!! It's the excitement of the hunt. I think we all look forward to rock hunts, especially with our fellow hounders . Or you can go by yourself, if that's your circumstance, nothing wrong with that. (But it's more fun with other like-minded folks!)
I've heard that the one that dies with the most rocks wins... Or was that toys? Jean

Mel, I am gonna slap you I swear!!! Quit posting pics of gorgeous rocks I can't get, you big meanie!
And all, is "North Cadys" generally referring to the Cadys as accessed from the north off the 15, while "South Cadys" refers to areas accessed from the south side off the 40?
And by this: "the gravel beds at the mouth of Afton Canyon off Basin Road" you mean where I went, right? Take Basin Road to the tracks, park, and walk around?
Shotgunner (and everybody), when are we going? I really really REALLY need to get back into the good stuff up there, but I need another 4wd to go with. Not goin back up in there alone.
As far as the whole aging thing, my new goal in life is to set up the best estate sale ever!

Susan,
Not to cut in....
The Northern Cady's are off Basin road, past the river, and down about 10 miles of river bottom. Once there, a couple routes will take you to different stuff, but the most popular is the one heading to Pepto Bismal Hill. From there, it's several miles of greenish hillsides dropping agates from erosion. You just gotta hunt and hike. It sounds like you ended your drive short of that.
The southern Cady's stretches from Ludlow all the way west to the Pisgah Crater Road. Included in this region is the Sleeping Beauty area, and the sections on the interior side of the hilly mountains from Ludlow accessed by driving by the Broadwell Dry Lake (where Mel's Rose Agate - aka Christmas Tree Agate comes from). One the hillsides facing the freeway in the canyons are jaspers and seam agates. Sleeping Beauty has produced some crazy colors recently. At Pisgah, flame agate, red moss, and plume pieces have been dug out the past few years from a place found by the guys at Diamond Pacific. They looked on Google map and plotted a line from Sleeping Beauty to Pisgah, and saw where uplift had shifted a bunch of material to the surface at several known locations. When they walked those few miles, they discovered several new deposits.
And thank you again Mel for letting me clean out your yards......you were threatening to toss all that stuff into the streambed if it didn't go away, if I recall.......Messing with the local geologists again....
Lowell

As far as the whole aging thing, my new goal in life is to set up the best estate sale ever! I know you better than that. You'll put it all in a trust! I am considering another trip for RTH in March. But that is shaking out to be to Indian Pass, dumortierite, kyanite, palm/bog... I may be able to put together a quickie smaller trip. Maybe you me and larry? Do you have 4WD?
