I had to purchase a new blade for my trim saw. I got a Baranca 303C in 6". When it came it had all these little dings on the inside surfaces. It is supposed to be brand new. When I wrote the seller he replied: "These marks are on all new thinner blades from Barranca, it is how they true the blades." Is this true? The blade appears to be true, but I haven't mounted it yet to be sure. What do you all think? Thanks.

I would contact Baranca, provide the photo, and ask them directly. Seller may be passing seconds as new blades.

That would disturb me. Find a better way or remake them. As it ages, heats and cools no telling what warpage will show up Mark.

I just called Barranca and surprising, the guy said yes they do have the small dings&scuffs from their truing process. I am not sure he understood exactly what I meant when I said "small dings", so I sent them an email with a picture. I hope to receive a reply soon and will let you know.

I have had two of them and neither one had even one ding in it. If that ding sticks out far enough it is going to rub on the stone and push the blade all over the place. That thin of a blade wouldn't take much. Jim

You gotta be kidding, looks like brand new junk to me. Those things aren't cheap, and all that damage will likely raise heck with the cutting. Totally unacceptable.

Nah, I bought a new 10" 303C a year or so ago and it didn't look like that. hell. it still doesn't look like that and I've abused it pretty bad.

Cutting rocks is hard on saw blades, I know I am guilty of abuse. Why would anybody want to start with anything other than a perfect blade? I always get mine from John at JSGems. Always quality at best price.

I have seen used retensioned blades with little hammer marks in them, and grossly messed up blades hammered away at by someone who had no idea what they were doing. Yours looks like the latter. As others have mentioned, at the spots where your dings are the blade it probably effectively thicker than the kerf, which will create big problems when attempting to cut.

Ok, I guess I have to go with it. I talked with Barranca twice and also emailed just to triple check. I enclosed the picture you see and here is the reply I got which matches what they said on the phone. His email reply:
Mark,
The marking's you see on the blade is for tensioning purposes. Lightly tapping the core in certain spots on the core tensions the blade to run true.
If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us.
Regards,
Don Young National Accounts Manager MK Diamond Products, Inc.
I checked and the dings are just slightly less than the kerf thickness so it shouldn't be that problem. I understand their rational for tensioning steel, it is just that I haven't seen this before on a new blade.
Thanks all for you input. Is it surprising to you too and what do you think about it all?

wow Mark I hate to disagree but I have been through no less then 10 of those exact same blades and not a mark on any of them. each one smooth as a babies bottom. I guess for the price of a 6" blade I would not fuss much as long as it cuts ok but if that were for a larger blade I would not have accepted it.
Is yours real thin like .014 or .020? mine were are always the thicker .032 so that may make a difference.

Well, should we discuss better quality blade options now? Because i dont want to use their blades if that is how they will be shipping from the factory.

OK, I tried to reply earlier but couldn't get the message to post. I'm guessing that blade is a .014". All the really thin blades will have noticeable dings from straightening. I think it is done in a machine not by hand. On the .020" you can sometimes spot very light dings. Also the 8" X .025". Most of the thicker blades you won't notice any. The label looks a little scuffed like it was somebody's show stock or something unless it is just the picture. Was this blade shipped from the factory or a dealer?

Dealing with Don at MK Diamond Direct has never been a very satisfying experience for me. Call Barranca Diamond Products and ask to speak to Frank, who is the Prez. and gives old Don a reason for being. Their info is:
Barranca Diamond Products 1315 Storm Parkway Torrance, CA 90501
Phone: 310-523-5867 Toll-Free: 800-630-7682 Fax: 310-257-3063
E-mail: bdcs@barrancadiamond.com
They are the"factory" and better equipted for such technical questions as "Why's my new blade F'ed up?" Actual place of manufacture is Korea. Hope this helps. Don't take no for an answer, you are to expect a blade without blemish when buying new. Good Luck! Mike.
