Thats looking good James I found the old shaft and eccentrics of the one I attempted to build, all the rest of it has been repurposed, I am itching to have a go again but at the moment I have a temperature issue too, 43 degrees here today, Thats around 110 of your degrees I think, I tend to hibernate when it gets so hot that all your tools are too hot to use. I moved the eccentric shaft toward the front of the barrel and it started rolling Paul. I had drilled a series of holes to move that shaft around in advance. where are you that it is so hot ?

Nice to see it run, now time to play at fine tuning. Great project.

I sort of figured the shaft might need to be to one side, I had mine dead centre and as I said the rocks just rattled, the thing self destructed before I got around to changing that though, I should have stuck with it perhaps, but I didn't have a working model like you have and couldn't see a way forward. I am in Victoria Australia, January Early Feb are our hottest and driest months, high temperatures are OK as long as the humidity is low, low 40s Celsius with 5% or 6% humidity is bearable as long as you dont touch anything metal and as long as idiots don't set fire to the cointryside.

That's right, you mentioned Australia, lucky you ! The drive belt angle plays a big role. The belt on my machine pulls vertically down. what you don't see so clearly is the the about 40 degree angle in the Viking. So the belts come from below at an angle and the shaft is almost centered under the hopper on the Viking. You can look at the end of the video to see where the shaft was moved away from the video take. The photo below the video shows the shaft where it started, about center, and no roll at all. The roll speed and vibration in the video is about the same that I set the Viking at to polish fluorite and soft rhyolite. The eccentric needs to be heavier, and less off-balance. That should give a tighter smoother vibration I believe; that's how it is on the Viking anyway. that is only a 1025 RPM motor w/1:1 drive. The Viking uses a 3450 RPM motor and reduces to about 2600 RPM on the eccentric shaft. so it is turning 2.6 times faster. But it will vibe 50 pounds of rock. 1/8 HP vs 1/3 HP, but I may change to a 1/4 HP 1725 RPM. The vibration rate/amplitude in the video will still tumble rocks though some what slower. But still fast.

Nice to see it run, now time to play at fine tuning. Great project. It needs to be tightened up a bit Larry, mostly the drive. The drive was all a slap on for testing. I was tickled that it is running w/one belt. It may become unstable left to right/right to left when I add heavier counter weight or more speed, hopefully not. I screwed bolts into the nuts for quicky weight change, they are cantilevered out and messy. The hopper is shorter and fatter, a 6 inch pipe, 10 inches long. The viking is like 5 inches and 11.5 long. The Viking is tight, cast out of aluminum, makes little rattle. That steel is much more likely to have the dime store rattle. Not to mention the rock to steel noise in the hopper. It is close and should not take too much tuning. It already vibrated one of the grease fittings off, they often ship loose in those pillar blocks though. May just use it for 500 and 1000, as the hopper was internally welded too, but still has pockets, weld access difficult. Built it real open, leaving lots of space for mods, access, adjustments. Disengage the belt at the motor, the eccentric shaft/belt goes w/the hopper when you do a clean out....

Did those lion hunters set you free yet? Cold rain for a week, so cutting and burning bamboo all week, the stuff that died in the freeze. It's leaning on a shed, it and a snow would crush it. anxious to get back to the vibe, the fun part will be tuning it i hope.

Yukky Burning bamboo in the rain!! It is by far the worst job on the farm. Ruined chain saw bar, two chains, drive sprocket and two broken bush cutter shafts. Lots of Aleve. I owe you for that amethyst Scott, you still want some of those steel spheres.
