I have some scraps that I want to tumble. Or should I cab them?

I've picked up some wonderful sepatarians tumbled by the waves that survived nicely, but who knows how many I passed up because they didn't. They are prone to undercut and hence you could probably control this better in the cab process than during tumbling. Just my thoughts. Tom

Yep, not bad at all. That is a pretty tumble, to heck with a wet shine.

Septarians tumble okay...can be very pretty but different hardness in different layers is always risky. I found this one on Joe's Rock Shop claim in Utah (that was a trip and a half) and made it into a pendant with silver. It looks better in person and could have been polished on a wheel but memories can be priceless. but is that really a Septarian? Charlie

Wow, nice job, both of you. I still have a number of Michigan septarians to play with. I posted some I did by hand awhile back but I can't find them now. I guess I swapped or sold them. Probably swapped...they do look really nice when you get a decent shine on them.

No problem tumbling Septarian. Very fast, and when you know how, quite easy. 3-7 days in rotary 60/90 and can be mixed with any stones <7 h. 12 hours 120/220--> 12 hours 500 AL oxide---> 12 hours 1000 al oxide---> 72 hours dry media polish. With all due respect to other's opinions and hard work. IMHO, what is posted needs to be reworked, and even appears to be attempted in a wet polish medium. Soft stones must be done using dry polish in a vibe. The ONLY issue one will encounter is potential undercutting in 1000 AL Ox stage b/w varying degrees of hardness b/w the calcite and the sedimentary "mud". I have a video I will attach that I just sent to my factory to assist on training with our 700lb vibratories (the video being a small UV-10). The video will give you an idea of a glossy polish, and actually show a dry polish. Madagascar septarian. In advance, please excuse commentary and feet in video. septarian dry polish video (with corn cob media)

You obviously sell somewhere then, you have a website we can check out? Did I by chance miss a thread on your enterprise?

I don't have a vibe but I think what I did with my original experiments (now misplaced) was to put the final polish on by hand. I can't see your video, I get an error message. Is there a YouTube portion anywhere by chance?

I don't have a vibe but I think what I did with my original experiments (now misplaced) was to put the final polish on by hand. I can't see your video, I get an error message. Is there a YouTube portion anywhere by chance? the video is MP4. Just download the VLC extension for your browser and it will work. This extension will allow you to play ANY video format. It was originally an Apple proprietary format, so Microsoft removes the codec from its Media Player, and IE by default. Sorry for the inconvenience. If necessary, I can always re-code it to .avi for those that are still in the dark... And peachfront, you don't have a vibe? For soft stones you will need one. Finally, no need to polish by hand. Yes, this will get you excellent results, but defeats the purpose of "tumbling". Once polished by hand, you now have "hand-polished baroques" and should post them in the lapidary section - where they belong.

Sorry captbob. 1960's methods don't work to today's standards. Get with the times pal I disagree, unless by "today's standards" you are talking mass production where a vibe would save time. I have rotary tumbles I would put up against a vibe any day. But I'm not going there, too much stuff to do today.

Thanks. I can play mp4s in my iTunes, I'll go do that in a few minutes. You are right about the hand polish...but...it's little houses in my neighborhood & my neighbors (who still live next door 20 years later) said they could hear my Lot O...so I was afraid to replace it in the interests of peace. :-( My rotary is real quiet. Although I sometimes think I could use a vibe in the summer when everybody's got the AC running & can't hear boo anyway?
OK I can see the video now. That does get a nice polish but I worry about dust. I also have dust allergies so I'm a big fan of wet work. I know, I know, problems problems. Of course you probably only have the lid off like that because it's a video so the dust is probably not really much of an issue.

I seal my vibe with a plastic bag on the bottom of the bowl.

Dust is an issue. Wear a mask. I seal my vibe with a plastic bag on the bottom of the bowl. Thanks. Will do if I get a vibe. Back in the day, I also ran it outside on a covered porch to keep off (the very frequent southeast Louisiana) rain but to keep the dust out of the house. Probably another reason the neighbors could hear it. The rotary is also out there going 24/7 but they simply don't hear that one. 3# Harbor Freight Chicago cheapie...laugh if you like and most people here do laugh but it IS quiet. I'm going back and forth about whether or not to get a small vibe just to run it in summer when they've got their AC units going anyway...maybe not this summer. I do have a lot of projects going OK just in the rotary for now... Actually I still have the Lot O and the 50# concrete block plus cushion thingy it used to sit on but I can't believe it would still work after all these years.
