Thanks, everyone, for your input on W10! I think W8/8.1 has some of the similar privacy issues found in W10 that have to be turned off in 'settings.' Thought about saving W10 on a flash drive. Would that work?

I think W8/8.1 has some of the similar privacy issues found in W10 that have to be turned off in 'settings.' Now you tell me I got snookered into buying WIN 8 As you’ll recall I built the new computer and tried loading my full install of XP It was no go. Everything I tried. XP would NOT load ! Well some folks I talked to told me perhaps the new SATA drive technology and motherboard configuration were to advance for the XP operating system? So I went out and bought WIN 8. UUGGHH!! That was like 120 dollars. But it was certain to load. (Actually I tried to get a free copy of Linux operating system to load. Anything to get this new computer to bootup. But I couldn’t find that.) Anyway long story-- shorter. WIN 8 wouldn’t load either! I ended up with 700 dollar paperweight. Longer story --even shorter. The problem was the motherboard was BAD! How does that happen!? Well I exchanged that out at Fry’s Electronics’. And everything was fine. But I didn’t load XP--- being that I bought WIN 8 & Fry’s Electronic wouldn’t refund my purchase price for it. So I ended with 8 and didn’t change any privacy setting. Now Microsoft. NSA, CIA, FBI, Chinese hackers and the other bums know all about rock’n hearts. mostly here's my original post for the historical archives I built my current system from scratch. I wanted to load my full install of XP I already own that, wanted to save the money, from not buying Win 8. Everyone was saying how lousy it was any ways But the XP wouldn’t load! I tried ever tweak imaginable For days! It would not load! So I had 600 dollar paperweight! I got really disgusted WTF could be wrong? The best advice I was getting was that XP Wasn’t recognizing the new hardware. Especially the hard drive So I broke down and bought an OEM version of Win8 Another 180 bucks But it was sure to load! BUT NO! It wouldn’t load either! UUUGGHHH! I was flipping out hardware pieces Trying to find bad ram… hard drive ect. Ends up being bad motherboard! The only one on shelf & it’s the one I get An ASUS ! One of the best. Well I traded out the mother board And bam ! Win 8 loaded like a charm So that how I ended up with Win 8 And guess I can use my full install of XP as Frisbee? ! Fry’s electronic treated me really well exchanging the parts out. nothing better to do then re-visit the past mostly™

My older PC runs Vista and my laptop is Win7. I have used 8 and 8.1 at work. It's getting to be time to build a new PC, it will be Win7

that's a pretty optimistic forecast, spirit that all the bugs in WIN 10 will be smoothed out by 2020
Lee--- if you have a full install of Win 7 it will be wise to load it on your new machine if not I have a full install of XP I could frisbee to you

Thank you, amygdule, for the tips on how to install it elsewhere! spiritstone, does the icon show up after you uninstall the update and restart your computer? Which update is it on W7? Could it be your system restore settings?

Could it be your system restore settings? GK I never installed 10. The patch to install wont stop even blocked. Deleted the kb code and it stays off until I shut down or reboot. This way it just waits until the next time my system updates, then asks again to reinstall itself. Looking at the geeks way of shutting it off permanently, but not future updates that are going to be needed.

The 'Get Windows 10' icon is on the taskbars of both of our laptops (W7 and W8.1), spiritstone, but I unreserved our W10 copies through the icon so it does not do anything. Please try removing the icon from your task bar by clicking on 'notification areas icons' then click on "GWX" (Get Windows 10) and underneath 'behaviors,' please select 'hide icon and notifications.' ? Sounds like folks may have to uncheck the updates that are connected to W10? We manually update Windows updates and have automatic updates turned off.

Except I let it install the updates that begin the initiate steps for downloading 10. So now I have to go into my update history, search out each of the patch codes and uninstall them. slow going.... ROFL, spiritstone. Sounds like you'll be busy uninstalling a lot of unwanted updates. Not sure, but read on a website that W10 is set to automatically download Windows updates, and there isn't another option for downloading? Rick said that we would probably purchase a Mac when support for W7 and W8.1 expires. (if we can afford one, lol)

Giving you a heads up on the patches indicated, they do remove 10 initiation. I uninstalled the patches, windows reconfigured, rebooted and no errors, system booted real fast. Works good! Did what i wanted it to. Keep a hard copy on a sticky note of the patch numbers so you're aware what is what when they show up in the "Asking" to update list. lol

I have used Ubuntu but I do occasionally play games. Also Linux is not at all secure, it's not a target so there's less troubles for now, but when the hackers get tired of hating Bill Gates through his customers the Linux users will be in trouble.
