Intheswamp We are thinking that there will just be a vent or two into the rock room for the A/C just like in a bedroom, so no air from the rock room would get into the garage. I will definitely bring it up to the A/C guy to be sure. I will take a video of the room when it gets set up. I don't mind hearing suggestions from others. Thanks, Andrea

Sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong I'm sure - but from my experiences I've developed the opinion that oil cutting saws belong outside if at all possible. I finally moved my last oil saw outside after I noticed that every time I ran my 10" Lortone saw with oil in the garage while working in the vicinity - using great ventilation, fan blowing and front and back doors open - I would develop a cough. If I stopped using it for a few weeks the cough would clear up - then come right back as soon as I started again. I did this several times until I proved to myself that it wasn't my imagination. This was with food grade lite mineral oil for lubricant. Plus the fact that the oil mist just gets EVERYWHERE - there's no stopping it from coating and building up on everything which then causes dirt to stick. The only cutting that is allowed in my work area now is my water based tile saw for trimming slabs. Andrea, I don't want to be a buzz kill with you in the process of putting your new shop together, but I need to emphatically agree here with Tommy's post. I have the same saw as you, but that doesn't really matter when it comes to the oil mist. When I got mine, (a year and a half ago?) I set it up in my garage and was overly cautious about the oil mist, leaving the lid closed for 5+ minutes after each cut and doing my absolute best to not breath in mist when opening the lid, after the 5 minute mist settling time, and even then leaving the garage for several more minutes. Gotta say, that made for more time between cuts than the actual cut took! Soon after getting the saw, I developed a cough as well that sent me to the doctor. First they said bronchitis, and when it didn't go away with antibiotics (whatever else as well), they said it was sinusitis - not sure what the heck the difference is. Anyway, the only thing I could attribute this to was the new saw usage. I will not use that saw in the garage anymore. I roll it outside. Maybe it was something else that caused the respiratory issues, but I kinda doubt it. I'm in my mid 50s and also a smoker, but this problem has never happened before of since. I also use a food grade mineral oil like Tommy. Maybe it's the oil used ?? but all my research lead to that being the best choice. Some here swear by the saw mist reducing products. Maybe that would help, I have never tried one. I know I should! Again, I don't mean to be a downer, but that mist must be respected and expected. It will get on everything. The cart I got for my saw is super easy to roll. Don't know what kind of threshold you have under the door, but if it's not too high/steep you could easily roll the saw outside if you were to add a small concrete "porch" area outside the door. As I wrote before, this saw is really quiet - your neighbors would not hear it. Unless maybe you are cutting at 2 am - who hasn't! - and their bedroom windows are open, and they are already awake. My cart - can find info on where I got it if you would like. A little pricey, but it's the best available. (like 200 bucks?) My other thought is that you are going to want to be able to get to the right side (when facing it) of your saw. Lastly, a towel will not be necessary over the saw when cutting, it is sealed tight! Love your new shop, it's coming together great! Just trying to help with the been there done that kind of stuff.

captbob I do appreciate the advice. I have a small concrete square in front of the door but it's probably not big enough to roll the saw out on. We are talking about putting a patio outside my door, but it might be a while before we do that, we are still trying to figure out what we want to do with the backyard. I will get some of the no smoke that Scott recommends to see how that works in the meantime. I'm just wondering if using it would void the warranty on the saw. Did you order your cart online or get it at Lowe's or Home Depot? Thanks, Andrea

@shotgunner I remembered you mentioned this before so I went and got some today. How much do I use? The saw holds a little over 2.5 gallons of oil. Andrea

I started moving in some of my rock buckets. I wanted to rinse them off to get the dust off and to make sure no scorpions were in the buckets. I didn't get too far because I was too busy looking at all of them. Here are the first 5 buckets. From a local rock shop Rios from Mel Montanas from Wendy

ooooh rocks! Now we're getting to the good stuff.
A(nother) suggestion if you can stand one more.
I would move your middle shelves up before you load them with goodies. You are going to want your heaviest things on the lower shelves. If you are storing bulk rocks in the shop, they might ought to be on the bottom two shelves. I buy heavy duty milk crates from Home Depot for about 9 bucks each. Not the cheap dorm room crates, but "real" ones. Great for rock storage! They are just under 11" tall and a hair over 13x13 on the sides. FYI
Anyway, just a thought. But maybe you already measured that 2nd shelf from the bottom and it's perfect now for Flat Rate Boxes. Who doesn't have rocks stored in them!

captbob and jakesrocks Shelves are slowly filling up. Still have 26 more buckets to move in. It's been hot. Made a few cuts with the saw, it's getting dirty but not quite mud yet. It seems like I spend more time trying to get the rocks secure in the vise than I do cutting them. That's ok I will get it and I'm still having fun. Waiting on the A/C to move the tumblers, which should be early next week. Andrea
