I started as a cabber, and I still do all the shaping on the cabbing wheel but in the interest of time I've been doing the sanding and polishing in the tumbler.

I've always picked up rocks as sentimental mementoes every where I go but 2 special ones got the nerd mineralogist in me awakened!!! So a year or so later I'm an avid Rockhounder hence my bucket buddy, I'm very active in my local gem and mineral club, I've learned to cab, tumble, wire wrap, metal smith, slab... etc... it's perfect for an extreme ADHD person that still loves to read and learn! Good think I'm an Ole Miss Fan! Still have a ways to go on the slabbing. A new table comes in today an all of this in a 16x20 shop LOL good thing I'm a short little woman! I'm all of the above and working daily to develop my skills an open my own Etsy store!! You guys have been instrumental in all of this!!

melhill1659 - Thanks for the shop tour. The next best thing to rock pictures is shop/equipment pictures. Looks like a fantastic work area. Chuck

Great Poll Tela! Should have something like this at least once a year so new members can share their stories.
Mine began with a 2" pyrite cube on my 4th grade teacher's desk addicted me to minerals. Seeing "Cathedral Geodes" being mined in Artigas Uruguay added interest in geology, so I studied both at BYU.
I was working as an electrician in 1960 when Bob Rollins closed his rock shop in Las Vegas and moved to Orem. I wired the home he had built. He offered to teach me how to cab and do silver smithing in exchange for wiring his basement shop. I used his equipment until I could buy my own several years later. Back in the day I was a caber. I tried tumbling once but felt I didn't have enough control over the outcome. I couldn't sell water to people dying of thirst in the desert.
A neighbor handicapped teen caught my attention so I bought tumbled stones and various findings, super-glued them together and gave them for him to sell. He kept the meager proceeds but enjoyed the girls attention even more. Sadly his poor health lead to an early death a couple of years later.
Haven't done much since - Wiring powerhouses didn't leave much time for sleeping, much less anything else. Finding RTH spurred a lot of sharing and garnering great long distant friends!

Next time How about adding sphere making, Napping, and all the ways to use them - knife handles, necklaces, broaches, rings, . . . Perhaps that might require a whole new forum.

melhill1659 You shop is to kill for. You might want to put the gallon of Muriatic acid on the floor in a safe spot.

Patagonia for agate. Indonesia for coral. NW for pet wood Brazil for agate and wood. etc
I have to say, if a billionaire I would be firing up the jet to collect. Journeys to all corners of the earth. No rush on earth like finding rock treasures in beautiful locations.

It's on a really sturdy shelf Jim plus I have grand babies who love to come in and watch me work and ask lots of questions!!! Speaking of Rockhounding all over Connell is taking me to British Columbia Canada in July for 2 weeks just to lick rocks I'm pretty excited! I was looking at a study recently that France may be my next location their agates are to die for!

Is that a crock pot below and to right of muriatic acid melhill1659 ? Please forgive nosy. The only reason I mention the muriatic is that muriatic containers often crack and start leaking. BC- no fair ! Most beautiful place on earth. Banff, Kamloops, the west coast. I stayed in Golden(near Banff) as it was cheap. Kamloops in July is a party town. You would think you were in a Florida beach town. 100F+ in July. The roads on the west coast-up to 13% grades, like driving straight down hill. Be sure to downshift. Rent powerful car. Where is your BC destination ?

accidentalrockhound it's usually not that clean but always mostly clean an organized. It's just a habit/OCD thing. I have added 2 more work stations in the last 2 days. Family was amazed I could actually get them in there 😂 I really appreciate my construction workers family and person background! Measure 2, then again and write it down because you forgot the first two times then when things don't fit right, push-hammer-or duck tape it LOL aDave I agree with you about this forum and some of its uniquely wonderful people bringing more joy to one's life! I want to see pics of yalls work area!!

rockjunquie To get the most information, take a poll with of choices taken from the Home Page. RTHlings could check off as many as applied. This might help Tommy in setting up new sections. Could add: What new sections would you like added?
