I'm not going to be able to do cleanouts for at least the next coupla weeks since my cleanout station is outside in the back yard. The water supply is a garden hose and it will be frozen. Last week cleanouts were done at 40 degrees and that is about as low as I want to go with my hands in the cold water that long. The barrels are spinning in the garage and it should be fine in there after going down to 12 degrees.

Map numbers/temperatures seem to be updating automatically. My sister and BIL live in Jacksonville (Fl) and are both up in Rochester Minnesota right now for the birth of first grandchild. Happened this morning... Sister has been there a month and is staying until March or something stupid like that. She has told her daughter that if they have any more children to kindly do so during the summer months. High temp in Rochester tomorrow predicted to be -8°Might be bearable if used to such, but no place for Florida folks! *snicker* Went to Florida about 20 years ago, a friend had a condo by kissimee. Went out and about and think I will stay in MN because I thought I would freeze to death and it wasn't even freezing. Only brought a sweat shirt and brrrrrrrrrrrrr didn't enjoy it at all.

Man, I do not know how you cold weather folks stand it. Not super cold here this morning in the low forties but with quite a wind chill in the open pastures. Had to take guests out on two trial rides today and I was wearing a heavy Henley T, a lined long sleeved shirt, my Carhardt ranch coat, gloves and my warmest felt hat and I freaking like to froze to death. Couldn't even feel my toes in my cowboy boots. I cannot even comprehend how it must be in subzero temps and that ugly white crap too. You guys are tough as nails, that's for sure......Mel

After watching this today of MT Washington at -31 plus 100+ km winds dropping the temps into the -80's. Toques off to you brave souls I dont mind the cold temps but add in a windchill and it's a whole new ball game. MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. (AP) — Weather observers atop the Northeast’s highest peak say the temperature has hit negative 34 degrees, a record for the day. Adam Gill of the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire says the previous record of negative 31 degrees was set in 1933. The observatory posted a video on Facebook showing him emptying a pitcher of boiling water into the air, where it immediately turned to snow in the cold and hurricane-force winds.

I can't disagree! Spent the last year working in the Mojave desert and found it far more comfortable than where I live in Chino. Same or lower temps and lower humidity in Barstow than Chino. Having just visiting a week of sub freezing temps, I'll take the heat.

Scott, 85 degrees! Man that must be nice. I still remember one year in Ojai around Christmas, it was something like 90. I love the hot Texas weather, though we are in kind of a cool part of Texas, so it's not like south or west Texas. I count the days till winter is over. Supposed to plunge good ( 17 degrees) on Sunday and I'm not looking forward to it. Hoping the forecast will change.....Mel

Wow it -is- 500 posts . . . that would be 1.33 posts per day during my 374 days as a member of this forum. This is a picture I took here in Monti Sano Mountain State Park in the mid 80's after a snow and a night below 10 degrees. I lived on that mountain or I would have never been able to make this photo . . .

Wow, that's nice for Q. I've been there when it was quite hot, when there was a massive sand/dust storm covering all the rough rock, and when the trays of slabs were all frozen solid. Weather is really odd there....Mel

It's just not warming up here, day or night. This is Vermont and we usually have a fair bit of cold in the winter, but this is only December -- what will it be like when it actually gets cold in January/early Feb? Even with the sun out all day it's not going above 0 F. Okay, yesterday it got less cold and went to 2 degrees above zero for a while in the afternoon. Today it's after 11 AM and it's warmed up to a whopping -5 F... not so bad except the wind is about 15 mph, which makes a wind chill of -26, according to my chart. Temperature only got down to about -10 last night, but old battery + cold + short trips = a car reluctant to start in the morning. I thought I had a plug-in on this car but I couldn't find it, so hmmm... one of these morning its just going to go "Ret... ret...ret" and that will be it.
My biggest worry right now is my horse. He's not "old", but he's got a few years on him. Usually he goes into winter with a little extra fat, but he dropped some weight this fall and with the cold temps has been slow to put it back on. (Yes, I've had his teeth done and he's been dewormed.) Also he didn't grow the yak coat he did last year. So I got him a blanket, but now I'm worried all the time about it rubbing. (Typically Thoroughbred withers/shoulders.) Plus he's been kept inside for several days in a row now and he tends to stock up (his lower legs swell) and get cranky. Now next Tuesday and Wednesday it's supposed to warm up into the teens so he'll go outside, but do I take the blanket off and risk him being cold, or keep the blanket on and risk him getting sweaty which would make him even colder? Animals, it's just one worry after another, makes you wonder if it's worth it.

At 4,500 feet we have been unusually mild. Down in the 20's at night, but up near 70 in the day.
No complaints - except about how bossy Mother Nature has gotten lately.

Dang, down to 30 here now and still falling hard. Gonna have to make sure the thermostat in the wellhouse turns on the heat lamp. Got the shop preheated pretty good so hope the pipes don't freeze again. Where's all this gulldanged global warming when you need it? God, I hate winter time!....Mel
