Was down to -15 or -20 F here in Minnesota yesterday. Now it's a balmy -5 with a low near -11 tonight!

Wife Unit was lying out back in the sun today and I was outside doing tumbler cleanouts and there were freakin' mosquitoes out there.

We need a good 40 some below to kill all the pests off, haven't had a good freeze in a few years. I hate mosquitos.

Till spring...haha, its the other bugs that need the cold blast. Emerald ash borer and the larch borer are two of the bugs. Mosquitos don't like 40 below either but I think their eggs last for 20 years waiting for warm weather and rain.

The should die of starvation now because the ash are all dead. We didn’t have possums here when I was a kid, but we do now. We had a couple really cold winters (for here) a few years ago and I think it knocked them back a bit. They’re still around, but don’t seem to be as plentiful,

North Alabama Outdoor thermometer showed 11 degrees this morning and it's trying to snow. They're still predicting 7 degrees in the morning.

27 is the high today. Wind chill of 8. I feel like we're having a heat wave compared to some of y'all.

Central WI: Was -10 when I did AM chores today. 15 MPH winds, which = -35 wind chill. Still not wearing my heavy pack boots or snow pants, too warm for that. Stay warm everyone in the South, as I know you are having colder than normal temps there.

It's just not warming up here, day or night. This is Vermont and we usually have a fair bit of cold in the winter, but this is only December -- what will it be like when it actually gets cold in January/early Feb? Even with the sun out all day it's not going above 0 F. Okay, yesterday it got less cold and went to 2 degrees above zero for a while in the afternoon. Today it's after 11 AM and it's warmed up to a whopping -5 F... not so bad except the wind is about 15 mph, which makes a wind chill of -26, according to my chart. Temperature only got down to about -10 last night, but old battery + cold + short trips = a car reluctant to start in the morning. I thought I had a plug-in on this car but I couldn't find it, so hmmm... one of these morning its just going to go "Ret... ret...ret" and that will be it. My biggest worry right now is my horse. He's not "old", but he's got a few years on him. Usually he goes into winter with a little extra fat, but he dropped some weight this fall and with the cold temps has been slow to put it back on. (Yes, I've had his teeth done and he's been dewormed.) Also he didn't grow the yak coat he did last year. So I got him a blanket, but now I'm worried all the time about it rubbing. (Typically Thoroughbred withers/shoulders.) Plus he's been kept inside for several days in a row now and he tends to stock up (his lower legs swell) and get cranky. Now next Tuesday and Wednesday it's supposed to warm up into the teens so he'll go outside, but do I take the blanket off and risk him being cold, or keep the blanket on and risk him getting sweaty which would make him even colder? Animals, it's just one worry after another, makes you wonder if it's worth it. Understand completely. I also have one who did not beef up as usual. Of course, all horses are preferring to stay outside and not go into the barn, but it is open for them, if they choose.

Jugglerguy, we have 'possums around here now. They come out on warmer (less cold?) winter days. Lots of the older ones don't have the ends of their tails -- probably frozen off.
The first one I ever saw in Vermont was up in the hills, some 25 years ago (roadkill, of course). I was so surprised, I had to go back and take another look.

Then I grabbed the camera and got a couple shots before she left the neighbor's yard. Can't leave cat food outside or they become porch pets.
