No I definitely don't think that it was false advertising. It was an example of the rough that was sent for the Brazilian comp a few years back. You come to expect that competition rough is going to be nasty, very nasty. That way you sort the really good tumblers out from the bad. If you read the rules around the marking schedule these guys don't mark down the presence of natural flaws. So its a case of try your best and see what happens. If you give people beautiful rough then you will never get enough separation for the entries.

It really hurts to send off substandard entries when you live as far away as I do.... I mean really hurts... But it's the same for everyone and you got to be in to win.

Looking good, just getting my out of the polish tonight, they will get a quick burnish then will then get them into the mail. Pity I didn't get the colourful ones... Mine were all pretty boring.

Mine were really nasty, On Monday I took them out of the 600 stage washed them up and put them into the polish. I have been trying to get the best out of the material but keep on getting new pits etc opening up just when I think there are about right. They will polish well but lots of flaws. While I am not totally convinced I think I will get five reasonable stones to put in the mail for judging. Lets hope they get there in time as its a long way from NZ to the States.

Hello All, Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. I think what I will do is use strictly one type of stone - I have a bag of rainbow obsidian and try the various polishing times and speeds. personally I would have thought that the times in the instruction maula would be a bit more accurate, but I will try longer times with one stone type or one stone hardness only. We shall See!!!! Hopefully I am not going to offend you here but I probably will, How about you put the obsidian off for a while. Obsidian can be very difficult to get right. I suggest that you get yourself a bag of agate and have a go at that. It is much easier to get a good result on and will give you a nice baseline to start off with. Cheers Scott

Quick question is that your whole load? If so I think that you will never get a polish. Also at least two of the stones (the middle one and the one at the bottom) look like material that will never shine up.
To start off with you need your barrel at least 70-75% full in order to get enough grinding or polishing action.

I think the organisers are doing a great job... the reason they chose this years material was to challenge everyone. There is no point in giving out material that is easy to tumble. If you do that then you will end up with everyone tying for first place. My raw material was bad... really bad but it was the same as everyone else's and I got beat fair and square.... I also was willing to be embarrassed by the result... helps to focus the mind next year

30 year old? I wonder if my 20 and 24 year old daughters could pass for my little sisters.....I always wanted sisters. Thanks! Andrea Wow a real tumbling champ and had a daughter at 6 years old. Over achiever huh? Daughters are the best in spite of what your mom says. grin No wonder you won the world title. What kind of rocks did they give you that year? A very belated congrats on your victory.
Do you remember where the New Zealand entry placed.... cheers Scott

Well just finished mine up yesterday, yet to take a picture but will post as soon as I do. Not really that confident about the finished product but I was in the situation that every time I thought that I had the stones to a point where I could do the final 600 SCI pre-polish another fault would open up. I got to the point where no further tumbling was possible or else you would need more than a 10x loupe just to see them. The good news is that I ended up with five flawless well patterned stones with a mild shine on them. Will probably post them off real quick in case I am tempted to mess round with them again as all I will end up with is a pile of mud.
Normally I wouldn't go near anything like Hayden Hill jasper (and it isn't a real jasper) as it is way too soft. However was happy to give it a go for the competition. I must admit it was real tricky to get right.
Best of luck to everyone who is still working on their entries
Cheers Scott

Go for it Snuffy, still can taste that awesome chili that you cooked when I came to visit. Our tomato season was rubbish this year due to too many cool days.
