jamesp I had an incident with a 67 Yamaha R1 that cracked several ribs and broke my nose. If it hadn't been raining I might have not made it, I wore a helmet strictly as raingear back then before Oregon had a helmet law. If you haven't I suggest you at least pee in a cup and let someone take a little blood to check your innards for organ damage, a good friend lost half his pancreas from rolling a Veedub as a young guy. If you mill over past near-death events during your lifetime an incredibly uneasy feeling can overwhelm you Lee. By chance you wore a helmet that day... Those that ride 2 wheelers often have more than one story to tell. You mention the Veedub accident, many a person has suffered terminal accidents with much less. Having a much better day today. Guessing the damage is limited to the ribs. A long wait at the medical establishment might trigger more anxieties and problems than staying home in a relaxed state. Might as well dodge the doc. Thanks, may have regrets later...

Come on over and we can sit in the rocking chairs(if we can even rock them)and discuss our ailments. Like grumpy old men are known to do. That's all Denise needs is another cantankerous old fart around to trade ache and pain stories!!! She is euphoric presently as the contractors are putting in the master bath. She could stand the abuse. It might be you and I that get tired telling our war stories before she tired from them. Having a better day today. Thankful

jamesp OMG, that has to be scarey as hell. I remember pulling the mower gang through the golf course rough using the uphill side brake to keep it from slipping and thinking I was about 10 degrees off the tip point, probably a good thing I moved my work indoors. I'm really hoping to meet you in person while we're both still alive, be careful. It would be an honor to meet you Lee. Hopefully before we meet our maker ! We have plenty of common interests and beliefs.

Jim, If the 4th day pain is greater than the 3rd day then you probably need to get yourself to a Doctor/Hospital( I assume you have not been?) and find out exactly what you are dealing with. You don't need any nasty surprises in a few days from some complication. Don't make me come over there!!! Henry Lol, well those broken ones 'click' when moving in certain ways. They are certainly broken and will continue to be painful till things heal. A single cough at 4pm yesterday set off 8 hours of incredible pain. As if the broken end closed back poking into the cartlidge perhaps. Come on over and we can sit in the rocking chairs(if we can even rock them)and discuss our ailments. Like grumpy old men are known to do. Fortunately there is two hefty contractors finishing the master bath for this healing duration. They have been a big help with extracurricular duties.

The roll bar idea is the way. Looks like I will replace the 50 year old tractor with poor brakes and manual steering and get some hydraulic assists. And certainly a roll bar. Maybe add in a sickle bar mower for the bank mowing.
It's a safety issue ! Hope you feel better- Patty
The next tractor may well be equipped with a sickle bar setup Patty. You nailed it.

Your brain is firing on all 8 cylinders jasoninsd ! You are too young to be concerned with "wood shrinkage" lol. you may never have to be concerned with such ! So my dream would be to walk up on a field full of untouched shrinkwood. There are half acre to two acre patches of similar petrified wood or palm scattered on open land in this area. Well, the exposure may only be 2 ditches running thru the patch. Most have drab specimens but it is possible to find high grade stuff. These patches can yield a gold mine. This spot had a high preponderance of palm. Probably transported only a short distance from an overlooking plateau to the left judging from the topography. This is the high water mark for Lake Falcon which has probably not been covered with lake water for decades. The highwater shoreline is to the left. Mesquite has been happy growing on this higher elevation lake bottom since the lake has dropped for so long. The sad part is that the calcium carbonate 'Paint' has dissolved away so the rockhound can see the the rock surface. The other 95% of the cobbles closer to the lake are still heavily painted and hidden with the calcium coating. There is enough fine rocks there to cover every rockhound's yard 10 feet deep with fine material. An ag sprayer with water diluted with muriatic acid would expose those calcium coated suckers !

Well let me say something about a large surface area rib cage injury. muscle spasms from sharp pains start to play ping pong with each other. move wrong and one rib stings you setting off muscle spasms that yank on the other damaged ribs in a chain reaction. The fear of coughing or having to move your body seems to set off anxiety and then tightening of muscles and triggers more spasm attacks. Each day has gotten worse since Monday at 2pm. Sounds about right, the 3rd day after an injury can be the worst day for soreness. It is psychologically relieving to know tomorrow will be the 4th day !
fortunately Denise had a nebulizer and some Albuterol cartridges from when we had to treat her mother. This softened the junk in the (smoker's)lungs and allowed it to drain off and relieved the need to cough and opened up the bronchial tubes for less strained breathing. Pneumonia is the biggest threat with rib injuries. There is visible swelling that must be compressing the lungs and bronchial tubes. Must say that impact rib damage from one side is easier to handle than having the entire rib cage compressed.
This farm has over a mile of pond edges and 2 miles of creek banks so mowing has always been a dangerous task. Most of the tractor accidents locally have been from backing the pull behind mower to mow a creek or ditch edge and having the tractor roll down into the ditch causing the tractor to fold/flip back on the mower and sandwich the operator between the mower and the tractor. The roll bar is effective in that situation as well as a roll over.
Tommy - please don't suggest to wife to pinch James - cow tipping sounds like a much safer pastime Patty - Tom is right, the mower hit the barn and did prevent further roll over. Dave - Your horse riding experience sounds frightening. You were fortunate enough survive and do playback after the experience ! Ed - I constantly envisioned this happening for years and having an emergency plan. Instincts treated me well when it finally happened. Brian - It is likely there are more similar wood deposits to discover along the Coker formation in Bama. Maybe they will bring some nice variety to the table !
The roll bar idea is the way. Looks like I will replace the 50 year old tractor with poor brakes and manual steering and get some hydraulic assists. And certainly a roll bar.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought some of those pieces were amazing Dino Bone! How amazingly similar. I get it from a structural standpoint it's the same basic thing as Dino Bone...cells being replaced by agate...but WOW! Thanks for tagging me on these!! They're stunning!! They also call it dino bone wood. It is wood that shrinks into checkerboard like shapes(called shrinkwood) and then each wood section agatizes or converts to a druzy cavity. It is mostly found in east central Texas. It is common for wood to rot and shrink into cubes in hot dry areas(might be what happened in ancient times being Texas was probably a hotter environment than say Montana/Oregon/Washington, my theory ha). Let's just say that Texas wood can be really deceptive in not being able to say it is wood due to its shrinkage or/and mechanical manipulation of some type. And probably a much wider variety of species variety often found in tropical environments(compare a monospecies forest of conifers up north to a wide variety of hardwoods in a southern forest). Or a much more diverse species of trees in tropical forests of say Brazil or Columbia.

jamespCool finds Jim! Sure seems to confirm a global flood to me! It is an occurrence across the world to find bivalves piled up and paired up yet fossilized in live pairs in deposition position and not digging down thru to the next layer. Layer after layer with no burrowing thru the contact interface. They got buried live and the water dropped fast and left them concreted and dying/drying in place. No time/chance to open up and dig.

What the heck happened to my comment from the other day?? Obviously, once again I closed the tab without hitting the "Post Reply" button! LOL I think some of the coolest cabs I've done were a couple of fern roots from West Texas - where you could see that cross sections of the cellular structure like that. I love seeing this kind of cross-section! Thanks for posting these pics! If you like fern you might like pocket-rot-wood Jason from friend's collection.(it's Texas thing) www.flickr.com/photos/97769244@N00/albums/72157613759024309

God got my attention like no other time ever Dave ! It was a weird feeling and in slow motion. Yes a thick fellow would have probably not fared well. I did have the presence of mind to lift my legs up and swing them to the right and roll my body down(sorta) between the seat and the steering wheel. I had reviewed this unfortunate emergency procedure many times for years should this ever happen. Some tractors have an open area to put your feet. This one has two shift sticks in that open area that you must straddle and unstraddle(called a widow maker design). I was able to turn the key switch off after landing to save the engine as it's oil was pouring out quickly.
Please finish your daily duties. Maybe this will program some safety awareness if needed.

Boy jamesp you sure did it good ! I've read many stories of people losing in all in just such an accident.
Good thing for the bamboo, I bet a dirt hill would have told a different story.
Enjoy resting up.
Patty
Thanks Patty. It only hurts when a draft of air hits me. Talk about being restricted, no way to move without pain.

Sorry you have to go through this. I hope you heal quickly and completely. Hard to look at it this way, but I think you actually had a very good day yesterday. A rush of euphoria came over when she came to a stop friend. It was a very good day.

Very sorry to hear of your accident. Prayers you will mend quickly and without too much damage or pain. You did go to the doctor, didn’t you? I appreciate the prayers Mark. It wasn't 8 months ago I broke a single one and it felt much better after a week or so.

That tractor is rare Jean. If it damaged the steering system it will be a parts tractor. It was in need of a rebuild too; the parts aren't so costly but the labor is costly. when I get mobile I'll go look things over. My hips got deep bruises too so I'm not moving around to well. It took me 45 minutes to get out from under it. I actually had to break my ribs to get past the fender. It was a bad experience. The best thing you can do for any body parts you injured, try to keep them immobilized. Don't go out and do ANY kind of work. Don't even go look at the tractor yet. It will be waiting for you when you are feeling better. For your ribs, if you feel a sneeze or a cough coming on - both of those are equally painful! - hold a pillow firmly against your chest, or trap a pillow with your chest up against the wall for support. Keeping those ribs immobilized will go a long way toward keeping down your pain level. If you don't start feeling at least a little better in a day or two, consider going to the doctor and getting it checked out. Trauma to ribs can injure your lungs, and other organs. Best to stay on top of it Hoping you recover and feel better soon, James! The pillow trick was learned from past broken ribs Jean thanks. There seems to be two that are clicking along with sharp pain when I move. They say not to wrap your chest for fear of pushing the broken end into an organ. Clickers are breaks, cracked ones rarely click. They are on lower right and away from heart. If the pain doesn't back off I'll go get an x-ray to make sure there are no sharp points punching thru. Am breathing steam to loosen stuff in lungs for easier coughing removal. Thanks for the recommendations, you are always a Godsend to us RTH folks.

Ouch Get well soon jamespThat's a harsh lesson in Mobile Equipment Safety and the Center of Gravity As the tractor rolled I figured I had about a 10% chance of surviving with my life or without severe paralysis dule. Thanks for your concerns. I could use some humbling .

That is a really cool pattern jamesp. I like the shapes of the crystal structures inside. The magnification of the photo helped see the structure Ashley. They can have geodes in each cavity. Cycads are larger and palm like but similar.
