ok I put in the rest of the time on the pen today. Finished rough shaping the other blank and glued the brass tubes inside them with epoxy. Each pen kit has a set of bushings you can buy separate. They step down the exact same amount at the actual pen kit Now on to the 220 hard wheel where I slowly shape down till the edges are flush with the bushings repeat for other blank, and shape as desired. This makes the jade layer quite this so you have to be careful from there I moved through the soft wheels to 3000, the polish was acceptable, so I stopped. If this was any other stone I would have taken it further, but if this orange peeled, there is not enough material to regrind. final step is to press the pen together following the instructions. I just use a bench clamp. The finished pen. Thanks for looking

gingerkid, yes, it was made into an ornament for the tree, hung by the 2 holes drilled in the wings. Looks pretty neat on the tree. I try to make a rock ornament every year.

used many times, some different styles too, by your description I assume the clamp is like the LS14 (which is slow to use), and the cross feed is accomplished by moving the motor blade assembly. send me some pics when you have them.

Well I missed that Craigslist find by a hair earlier this week, so I am still looking and would be interested. But, I would like to see some pictures of one and learn a lot more before pulling the trigger. I am sure people on her would vouch for you, but I have a policy not to buy things sight-unseen no matter who is offering.
How did you select the pump/filter? what are your improvements on oil handling? what is the improved base? how did you make the clamp assembly what does it look like? How does your cross feed work, how much lateral movement is there? What is the biggest rock that will fit?

you can't have too many rocks, but you can have too few saws to cut it all.

Hahaha I think some of them might be giving hope to us newcomers of winning... understandable.this is the second contest I've ever entered and I don't see myself as a pro.i get motivated and inspired when I see some of the kickass cabs produced on here.peoples killer works of art are made to inspire the newcomers to excel in there craft.or at least me.lol Dave agreed, I would love to see some of the pros throw down the gauntlet, would like to try to rise to the challenge.

good thought chuck, indeed this went through 220 in the vibe. it didn't do much, probably need smaller media to get in tight spaces

cab contest has been fun and strong the past couple months, and I would love to see that continue. I made a new year's resolution last year to put something into every contest here, and I kept to it, I think it is the only resolution I have ever kept. I think my cabbing improved because of it. It was worth the time investment. As to the themes, variety is the spice of life. Some may see it as a nuisance, some may see it as an additional twist or challenge. Whatever gets people interested. Glass half full/half empty situation. captbob maybe you could come up with an interesting theme. I bet you could. I will put together a MFRB as a prize for the contest this month.

Thanks everyone. I did a little more work on the pen today. 2nd blank drilled. Here is a view of the other side just before grinding enough to expose the hole. and the drilled blank next step is to rough out the shape. This is off the 80 grit wheel next step is to shape the second blank. Thanks for looking

I decided to make something for myself, and have always wanted to have a jade pen. I have made one of these kits before with stone, and it was pretty fun. This time through I thought i would document the process along with the lessons I learned from last time. Here is the starting material: one pen kit from the local woodcraft store, a little jade block from ebay, and some drill bits also from ebay. 1st step is drilling. It is better to start with a blank with parallel sides. This will help to keep things square later. The hole cant have any defects or the brass sleeve wont fit. This means that it it better to drill from only one side. So, I drilled to a depth that matches the length of the brass tube from the pen kit. then I cut the blank from the block, but am sure to cut it long, and grind back. Here I am almost through to the bottom of the hole. Go slow. If done right, this side of the hole opening will be exactly perpendicular to the hole. this leaves you with a drilled blank that fits the brass tube from the pen kit one blank cut, one to go. Then they have to be shaped and polished. More to follow, stay tuned.

I remember welding the interior of dump bodies as a kid for my dad. I was the only one small enough to climb up in there. But unfortunately, I haven't had to weld anything since I was 12, and reading all of the cool projects here has gotten me interested in picking it up again. I was hoping to get some opinions on good starter units, what to look for on craigslist, or any other advice on getting started. So what say you RTH? What is the best way to start zapping metal together?
