thanks, my first grinding wall had 4 poly arbors, i love the way they work, so i pick them up whenever they are affordable. I have 11 now. this version will incorporate 8 for a total of 16 wheels. biggest difference is that this one wont need the hoods that are harder to find

I decided to sell the suburban house and move to the country (story for anther time). One of the bonuses of the move is that I will have a lot more shop space. It also meant that I had to disassemble my old shop and move it. I am thinking this is an opportunity to redesign and refurbish everything and plan to post my progress. Here is a shot of the barn space. First step will be to break gown the old workbenches and clean out the space.

I drill before cabbing because I like to incorporate the hole placement into the cab's design, and it is too hard to get a hole perfectly placed in a finished cab. I drill from the back side of an slightly thick slab, that way any blow-out will be removed in the doming process. If the hole needs to be centered, I even bust out the callipers to check placement. Maybe I am fussy, but a misplaced/offcenter drilled hole really bothers me. I also tumble-finish drilled pieces and haven't had the amount of problems cleaning holes that others have pointed out. I did have some clogged holes once upon a time but that stopped when I switched to ceramic media as my only filler. Clean the holes with compressed air or an old waterpick. easy peasy.
last benefit of the vibe tumbling is that the edges of the hole, where it intersects the face of the pendant, get cleaned up and polished.

I have the same problems going from the hard wheels to the soft wheels. That transition is why i don't finish a lot of cabs. I am working to improve technique, but in the meantime I have 2 workarounds:
80 hard-->100 sic on expando-->vib tumbler (my preference, material dependant)
or
80 hard-->100 sic expando-->300 sic-->280 soft-->rest of grit progression

after I won the auction to have Don set a couple rings, I realized that I didn't have any ring-sized cabs! So I set off on a mission to cut some. Because Don is so skilled, I really didn't want to send him junk, so I made 6 cabs and had the little lady pick her favorites. These are the rejects.

It's been pretty amazing, I think when he went rockhounding he only took the best home with him. To the local folks, there is also a craigs list posting and a Facebook post in the NW rockhounds group and on Mt Hoods page. saw the ad on craigslist, I will make the trip up. Pretty interested in sphere machine and drop saw, and of course lots of the rough. Settled on an asking price for the sphere machine yet?

Another question is how did each of us first land here at RTH? was it a google search about tumbling, cabbing, wire wrapping, slabbing etc ... Chuck google search about buying a tumbler, was weighing the pros and cons between brands, most informative discussion was here on RTH so then I checked out the rock photos, and that was that.

Also might add rock accumulator, at least that is what I was before I got any space or equipment for cutting and polishing rocks. These days I only use the vib tumbler to polish cabs/pendants/beads, so mostly a cabber I guess.
