Polishing soft rocks with disks from harbor freight. The disks are 3.5 in diameter, they go on a arbor and fit in your drill. It's a 5 step process, the wheels are color coded. I know you said you do it all by hand but this may help. I use on sediment rocks that have different hardness and it works great. Other than that if it is a flat polishing you can go down to micron sand paper that is wet or dry. McMaster Carr sells different types of lapping compound but also somethings just can't be polished.

I've tried mirror wax with good results but also with bad results. Some rocks with the same MOH react differently. I think it is mostly "hands on" the luck of the draw. That's a defiant MAYBE.

Very interesting. Nobody has ever reported this much info with pics, unless you buy the right books. Are you writing a book?

Lunch is always a good idea. Must include Yuengling... And YES it will. The family is going on vacation 10 days, without me so Yuengling is packed in the frig and I heard it calling my name. :)

I'm retired too, and find every day to be a work day, well maybe not working as hard, but weekends no longer exist except that the funnies in the Sunday paper are in color. Yes, and that's good. Funnies. I use to fish bass tournaments and he was my partner. He always said the doing the week he caught good fish but the closer it got to the weekend the catch rate got smaller. Dale

Thought you might like to see the Starrett tach. On these the counter can be reset to zero. That is cool. Does the same job as what we have now and sure it's less money.
