The BLM told me if the land has a claim for mining, we can surface collect as long as we don't do it when they're working. Ive not seen any evidence of recent mining, no equipment, no humans except rockhounds. Lynn

Don, it is only a few members, not the whole club. There's a cliche that applies here - Welcome to the club! Every club needs its Soap Opera actors. Wow - Ropes & black eyes. Lynn

I buy old Karate belts at the thrift store, glue them into a 3-sided form to spread the water on the wheel & catch spray from the sides. For 3" wide drums, I use 2 widths in the center, one on each side. I use green contact cement for permanence, but attach them to the hood with temporary rubber cement. I'm sure I've posted a picture here somewhere. Yes, somewhere. Lynn

I, and many former and current members of the southern Utah rock club would very much appreciate it if directions to the Holt Canyon collecting site are not posted here directly. The club has tried very hard to keep this location out the world's spotlight to keep it from being overrun. Please send directions via PM if necessary. Respectfully, Don. I'm happy to guide people to this awesome location. I ask that anyone who comes does not publish directions or GPS coordinates. And remember - I get half of what you find! Just kidding. Lynn

zarguy or DonPicasso marble is one of my targets. Would love a big boulder. And some smalls for Jeannie. Snowlflake obsidian? Septarians? We could do Cedar City agate & Picasso in the same day. It's a 45 min drive to Minersville where Picasso is found. I haven't been there since they "reclaimed" the site, but I've heard people are still finding good material there. Septarians are found about 1 1/4 hour away. Obsidian is found north of Milford. I haven't been there in years. Maybe someone else will chime in about Obsidian. Lynn

where would one stay Cedar City? There are lots of hotels in town. This is before the Shakespeare Festival, so there shouldn't be a problem getting rooms. Since I live here, I've never stayed at a local hotel, so can't make any recommendation. Lynn

zekesmanjeannie is a teacher. She cannot get Friday off. But Monday she can. We will head out late Friday night and arrive before lunch Saturday to catch up with everyone. AzRockGeekAwesome. I hope you go. Will research temps on wunderground tonight. If we hound Cedar agate on Fri & Holt Canyon on Sat, you can skip driving to Cedar City & go directly to Holt. I'll get you directions. The 2 main issues I see are: Cut down the speed even more, closer to what lapidary requires, that may also cut down on the noise. Rheostat or other electronic hack? Isolate it from the water. Maybe running it an an angle like a Slant-Cabber would help keep water from the motor.
Solve those 2 & it may work out. Lynn

You picked the right weekend. It works for me!
I know there are lots of places people want to hound in Utah. I can offer to lead a Friday & a Saturday trip to 2 of my favorite places. One for Cedar City agate & the other to Holt Canyon for jasper and agate.
I would also offer my house & yard for a BBQ/potluck. Either Fri or Sat. Lynn

I know this is part of a longer trip for some of you. I'm thinking I can lead a couple trips on a Fri & Sat in April or May. I'm flexible. I have two shows in May - Mother's Day weekend & Memorial Day weekend. Lynn

The smaller the wheel, the tighter the inside curve. I bought a couple of 4" hard diamond wheels. Someday I'll make a Pixie clone, building my own soft wheels out of turned wood, plastic or something wrapped with a spongy pad & then coated with diamond powder in epoxy. Lynn

can you remove them from the drum and put them back on ? It's poosible, but I leave them in place & recoat them a few times before they get too stiff & less flexible. Then I take it off & put on another one. Lynn

Susan, awesome finds. I gotta get to Lavic! It's about a 6 hour drive from Cedar City, UT. I've stopped at Afton Canyon on a trip back from CA, but didn't find anything exciting. Someday. Lynn
