Rockoonz Nice pumpkin cab. 👍 The autumn contest collection is coming together nicely. In your 3rd photo, with the 3 circle pre-forms, you have a cab in the background that is speckled purple with white and yellow. Do you know the name of that rock? I have a small slab of what I believe is the same stuff but I don’t know what it’s called and don’t even know where I got it. I’m assuming it came from my husbands grandpas collection which would likely put it as an old stock collected item.

I will grab it after work tomorrow if I can and get a better pic, and see if Elizabeth or I can recall what it is.

Damn… that’s pretty freaking cool. Now I need one of those setups if this is how these contests are going to be played 😂 As usual, jasoninsd started it with his purr-fect creation back in the December contest. A lot of work they are no doubt, and I don't want to diminish from their beauty, I personally wouldn't call them a traditional 'cabochon' That being said I get a lot of feedback that what people like about this contest is that it's not being micro-managed so I'm not going to change that now At some point it would be fun to have 'carved feature' as a theme but I'm afraid that maybe three people are on that level that could accomplish it, myself excluded. Oh wow, I absolutely love the orange cat cabochon Jason. That’s really neat, and a great polish! And yes for sure liveoak the leaf cab should be in this months contest! 👍

Well I’m currently trapped under the cat and this is our first week of cold weather so pretty much I don’t think she’s planning to move for a while tonight. I will get some pics of my pieces hopefully tomorrow and then finally figure out the cloudinary thing-a-ma-jig.🤓

OK, here's my re-entry.
Sorry for all the controversy & thank you for the kind words from everyone.
I had to walk away from it all yesterday & let the rock dust fall I wasn't going to re-enter it, but it seems there are more points for it then against,
so to spare Tom more grief, I will (especially since this oak leaf was HIS idea). Patty Autumn Oak Leaf

So I’ve cut a backup cab just in case I can’t get something cut by this weekend. It’s a super nice cab as far as I’m concerned, however the move im doing and work days is hindering my creative abilities.

Trust me I’d love to. Except I have renewal permits that need to be submitted asap. When you become an engineer to build/design cool things. But instead spend 90% of your time filling out and submitting documents for government regulations 😂

That’s exactly what they are for lol. But when things get brought up last minute, I guess I become a secretary too 😅. Its easy work, just a lot of back and forth emails and data harvesting. Basically why I’m sitting here getting paid to play on the forum 😂

I made those dops to use double stick tape and fit in the chuck of a drill.
Too funny Lee, my husband machined (lathe made) me a similar one yesterday, (yours are welded I think ?)
with a 1" top and 3/8" bottom that screw together, as I'm trying to make exact circles for a
key chain project I'm trying out. Don't have that handy core drill.
But are you saying that double sided tape actually holds the stone good enough for grinding ?
I might just have to try that out this evening.
Thanks for the tip. Patty

But after sending him pics of vistaite chunks and slabs I found laying around the property, I’m beginning to second guess my offer 😂

liveoak the dops are lathe cut, I made several when I still had access to the die shop before I retired. I have a lathe but it stays in the crate until I expand the shop building, which comes after home remodel projects. The tape I used is the red 3M HD tape people use for no hole stick on wall hangers. Gorilla tape is reportedly better, but I've never had both at the same time. The cushioning foam in it gives a little, so no bueno with things that are super hard or undercut. Epoxy or super glue is more rigid, but I remove by heating the aluminum and volcanic glass can be a problem with heat.

I actually tried it today with what we call in the sailmaking business "super seamstick" , It's a super heavy duty basting tape made to hold layers of sailcloth together before sewing.
I found it lets the stone move a little bit when grinding so wound up with a less than perfect round.
So, I have to experiment some more.
No drill use BTW, grinding by hand, I'm trying to get the round to EXACTLY 1"
and the dop stick that Tom made is just a couple of thousands under.
So I have to grind the round RIGHT to the aluminum, and if it moves at all like it did, it's a problem- so I'm going to try dop wax.
At least I'm starting early on Christmas presents !
