Liveoak, I’m glad your leaf is back in the contest! Sorry I was late to the conversation, but late as I may be, I would like to remind you of the second post I ever made on this forum which specifically asked “how did liveoak create that awesome leaf” ?!? This one is no different (well maybe a little less green). So on that note, you have one more for the “ayes”…
Three things I’ve learned from this forum today: 1) if plumes/moss break the surface, best to not cab it (thank you realrockhound) 2 use a hole-saw to make perfect circles 3) my dops would look a lot cooler if my wife were a machinist.

Ya know that green spring leaf started all this, as I was frustrated that I didn't have the tooling to carve veins in it.
They were just missing. So my autumn leaf just HAD to have veins.
The one thing I learned this month is that I'm not looking to start a career carving rocks - it's a LOT of work.
For a once in a while art challenge- OK.

Hello, this is my first time entering so I hope I am doing this right. Here is my entry - Oregon fire opal I picked up on my first field trip a few weeks ago. For some reason the marker I tried to use to draw the shape kept washing off so I ended up just eyeballing it to make the shape. I used pretty much the whole length of the rough. There were fractures in the opal but it held together and I thought the slight opalescence of the them along with leaving the rough intact on the back looked cool. Oh god no, carving is a horrible punishment to inflict upon yourself. I picked up the notion that I was going to reverse carve “LMT” into the back of a carnelian agate cab for a fellow massage therapist’s birthday. I cabbed 4 different stones before I got it right and I would say it took me north of 12 hours total just to carve and polish those 3 stupid letters (including the 3 failed attempts)

What better way to show fall then a rock you self collected in it !
I love the side view - looks like some ancient mountain range.
Welcome to the contest

Certainly cursed Tom a number of times (his brilliant idea after all)
But of course, I finally had to get obsessed with finishing it.
Good thing it's not a carving contest cause it ain't up to that.
Not sure if you get Rock & Gem magazine but there's a column in there by Bob Rush, " Bench Tips". His big on carving out the back of cabs, and has had some tips & tricks to do it,
in case another brilliant idea pops in your head. You might find those articles on their web site.

Thank you Patty! I do not get that magazine, and while I don’t want to carve anything else, we both know that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen…. I’ll probably be carving something by next week if my glutton for punishment track record holds true. 🙄 So I’m definitely going to check that out

Make sure if/when that punishment starts (or ends) justinyou post pictures on the rock carving thread,
heck maybe it would help the next poor slob that gets that brilliant idea.

I think the working cabs from the back might be on page 2 .
Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Hmmmm, concave backed cabs. Do I see more ball end burr purchases in my future? I have literally about 500 lbs of hardwood scrap from a cabinet shop on my wood rack, I'm thinking diamond paste instead of tumbling grit though.

Here's my entry. Papa Bob Bed Thunderegg( Its important its labeled by this name and not just thunderegg) This is from a thunderegg that come from my private bed. Only a small portion of these eggs have been sold or are in collections, and are considered "Rare and sought after" for T-egg collectors. Anyone curious about the eggs, feel free to ask. Couple reasons why this cab represents fall to me. First, is that the bed was found in the fall around this time when I was only 8-9 years old. The second is that aside from the fall colors (red, yellow, orange, pinks) with earth tones. It looks like fall leaves laying on the muddy ground after a light dusting of snow that has begun to melt off exposing the leaves (we get snow out here this time of year). Anyways... sorry for the last day entry. With the new job and moving in/getting the new house ready, I just haven't had a lot of time to dig though material and hit the wheels. Thanks for the gander and good luck to everyone. We've got a lot of nice cabs in the running thus far. Priday plume cab I did around same time to show a difference between my eggs and priday eggs.

When you said private bed I first thought you mean from the "boxes under your own bed"😂
The cab is very nice and very autumn feel. The two cabs actually look quite similar, but from the pictures it seems to me the agate from your private bed might suffer less from undercut? Would definitely love to see more pictures of the Papa Bob Bed Thunderegg cuts!

Would definitely love to see more pictures of the Papa Bob Bed Thunderegg cuts! eggs from my bed suffer severely from undercutting. The matrix is extremely soft. In the future, all cabs cut from slabs will be stabilized in cactus juice in a vacuum chamber. I’ve posted a few of my eggs over in the thunderegg Thursday thread. I’ll post more in there and tag you.

realrockhound that's very nice, really like the plumes in that one. Thank you. Thing was a pain to cab/dome. The matrix on these thundereggs is so soft. Soft spots inside soft material. Lessons learned. All material will need to be stabilized from here on out.
