Wow! That rock is telling some story! You have some fascinating tumbles, that’s for sure! Thanks! I’ve just never found a fossil rock that was set in clear chalcedony. Usually it’s darker chert/Jasper or darker chalcedony that I find. I’m super excited about this one. It’ll be a careful tumble. Some of these really nice fossils are relatively close to the surface. Figure one more course cycle in the rebel 17 and then I will move it down to the 3/4 pound barrels.

*Edit 1/27- someone identified this rock as Goldwood from Falls ranch in Texas. After researching a bit, it really does look like it. Riverbend Lapidary here in the south Central Texas area has some in stock, so when I can afford it, I will pick some up. I found this strange shaped rock many months ago and something about it made me keep it. I finally ran it through several course runs and once the pattern started to emerge, it was so interesting I stopped tumbling it and put it into the vibe. I ran in the vibe a lot longer than I normally would. For the last 6 weeks or so it’s been in stages 2-4 with whatever other rocks I have in it at the time. I finally switched it to the final polish a week ago and this is as good as it’s gonna get. It looks like some kind of strange petrified wood…but it also doesn’t. All I know is I like looking at the interesting patterns.

I wish I had more of these to give out, but it’s definitely a one off. Im always looking though. The kid as well. That’s how we find these things, it’s a numbers game in a way. Most rock around here is covered with a layer of lime, chert or calcite. it sometimes takes months to get the outer crust off. It’s like opening a Christmas present very slowly. We’ve learned to look for certain small features that will give us hints as to what’s underneath, but still 2/3rds of what we find is tossed while in the course stage. Big rocks we collect I will hit with the hammer Lol. All of our throwaway rocks/partial tumbles end up in the front yard around the flower bushes and trees. Makes for real nice landscaping rock.

Our ‘Michelangelo rocks’ that we found awhile back. The one on the left we found a couple of months ago and it has tumbled fast. The one on the right we found at the beginning of last year and it’s been running for 11 months or so. They are nearly ready for polish, just one or two more course rounds I think. Both glow beautifully over a light so I’m going to mount them somehow like that.

The Jan 21 yellow stone looks like Golden Wood found near Falls City, Tx. It could be! I see a lot of similarities in the photos I’ve found online. I’m curious what others think about this rock…(any idea rmf?)

Try Riverbend Lapidary Golden Wood. I already did actually. Found him online, looked over the photos he has and sent an email. Looks like he’s in San Antonio, it would be great to have a local source for Rock.
