It’s neither here nor there, and it’s not up to me to say what’s allowed and what’s not. But for sake of discussion and knowing, unfortunately materials that used to be $0.25 a lb 50years ago have drastically increased in price. Woodward material ain’t cheap 😂. It’s also getting extremely difficult to come by as I’m not even sure collecting on the ranch is a reality anymore, but I may be wrong in that. Ranches are almost all closed to collecting now, all owned by the same person who doesn't want people and especially rockhounds on his property. Law of supply and demand was on steroids with what has happened to those materials. I think I shared some videos in July on some polished slabs, many from those ranches, for sale in an estate. I came home with 5 shoe boxes of those and other materials and it cost me over $700 of my $500 budget, and that price is basically wholesale. At the retail level at shows and on the internet I will more than double it.

Rockbrain, I find it hard to believe that material I paid a quarter a pound 50 years ago now sells by the gram. I don't shop on Ebay or any other sites so I have no clue as to the value of most material. I just select from blanks that might fit the monthly contest. rockbrain & Rockoonz are actually correct. I did some searching as well, and just one of the listings I found does have it at about $200 a pound... jasoninsd What say you? Is Victor's submission out of bounds? I would say the material is outside of the bounds of the "limited budget" for any other forum members to acquire the material... Sorry Victor...

I certainly wasn't trying to cause issues and figured it was just something you had around for a long time. On Ebay right now, out of the first 25 listings, 21 are in grams. Out of the ones that aren't, one is 4oz for $25 and the other one is 3 rocks that all fit in one hand for $50. Those are some of the cheaper listings. Didn't see any of the purple like you have. If you have any more I'll give you $15 a lb.

What a relief after I saw the disclaimer. I started to think this contest was anti limited budget contest...

Great looking cab victor1941. I do have a bit of an issue with it though. I've been working on a brecciated jasper one too and yours looks so good! Beautiful material and I think it fits the theme perfectly.

Nice cab jasoninsd. Great material and nice capture but what really shines for me, and what I think more people should be judging on, is how well the cab is cut. Just a sharp perfect girdle line and I great looking dome. I always get it eventually but I always have an issue with tiny scratches on Montana.

I don't think you're going there, but when I see this I immediately go to Frank Zappa Camarillo Brillo. "Is that a real poncho? I mean is that a Mexican poncho or is that a Sears poncho?" Of course it is on the same album as Montana.

Thank you ma'am! Okay...here's the REAL entry for the contest! LOL I wanted to do a cab in the horizontal position, but it always looked offset slightly...so I did a vertical shape instead... MONTANA AGATE I like the way the black inclusions "sprays" outward. I have to get working on my entry. Thanks Chris! I think the shot of the rough shows better how those "curl" the way the do. I knew I had to capture those and the small curve of brown dots on the left side... Nice cab jasoninsd . Great material and nice capture but what really shines for me, and what I think more people should be judging on, is how well the cab is cut. Just a sharp perfect girdle line and I great looking dome. I always get it eventually but I always have an issue with tiny scratches on Montana. Thanks Brother! The thing I like most about working Montanas...is when they're freakin' done! There's been a lot of discussion in the past about sub-surface fracturing caused by slabbing. I never knew what people were talking about for sure until I started working Montana Agates. I think that's what makes getting those dang scratches out so dang hard. I think the answer is spending an inordinate amount of time on the 220 hard in order to get "under" those sub-surface fractures...
