Here is another attempt at making a stone knife. I used some boulder opal for the handle and Big Sur jade for the blade. I kept it simple for fear of the blade breaking like so many before. Overall its about 6 or 7 inches long. Here are a before and after:

Tony,
That is such a nice combination. Im so glad that one didnt break. I am sure it is disappointing when that happens, know you put a lot of time into them.

I like the contrast, the flashes in the opal with the jade make it look like an otherworldly piece!

Great job Tony, I'm glad this one didn't break either, I'd totally give up if that happened to me.

Great knife Tony! Kinda reminds me of a throwing knife pattern. Contrast between the two materials is really neat and the swirls in the jade remind me of watered steel!....Mel

That jade is great - love the swirling blues in that one. Looks living!

Thanks all for the nice comments. If you use jade its a pain. The stuff undercuts all the time and if there are any fractures forget about it. Its best to find a good quality piece and do the the drop test before you glue it all together. If you use boulder opal for a handle it can be really tough too. Make sure you use a dark red matrix because the light stuff can fall apart. I had this problem with this knife. I made sure the slabs were a little thick, about 1/4 inch. Shain has a great tutorial on stone knife making: www.freeformcabs.com/howtomakeastoneknife.htm

Nice job Tony. Great combo on the stones. You should have made it for the jade festival.

I can picture your knife in a hand of an ancient Inca priest , doing a human sacrifice on the top of a pyramide... just sharpen that knife a little more for not agonizing the victim Adrian

Ed, I brought all the jade knifes I made to the jade festival this year and sold them all. I couldn't believe there was any interest in them. I am going to bring some more next year. Adrian, did you watch that last Mel Gibson movie "Apocalypto"?There was a cool stone knife in the movie it got me interested in making a knife again. If I could Knapp obsidian it could be real sharp. Thats takes a lot of skill and time though.

Wow, that is amazing! Tony, I'm guessing you can't knapp jade? But I have seen some amazing carvings out of jade. I am so impressed, as always, with the creativity here!

Karen, I don't think you could Knapp jade. I am not really sure though. I think obsidian Knapp's well because it is glass and chips easily. Jade is a fiberous stone. I think there are are some knappers here on the board, maybe they could chime in.
