Hello, everyone! This is what I cabbed and wrapped these days. From left to right: - a dino bone from Stonesthatrock; - a fancy heliotrope from Stoneageindustries; - a rocky butte jasper also from Stoneageindustries - I know it's pretty big but I couldn't cut anything of those patterns ; - a night-sky jasper (could be also named beach jasper) from Daniel-deb; this cab also holds the record for the thinnest cab I was able to groove, it's 4 mm thick and on some areas it even has 3.8 mm. I had some doubts I could make the groove but now I'm so glad I managed - a local opalised pet wood chunk, this is a pendant I made for a friend of mine, it's a customer request. fronts: fronts again: sides: and backs: Thank you for looking, Adrian

Adrian,
I love this idea and want to try one myself. What is the gauge of the wire in the goove? What is the kerf of your blade that you cut the groove? Thanks for posting and helping. john

Thank you both!
John, I have no idea about the gauge of the wire I'm using but its diameter is 1.1 mm. The thickness of the diamond blade (measured on the diamond powdered rim) is almost the same (1.1 ... 1.2 mm). I hope that helps.

Adrian: Wow! Your grooving technique certainly makes a very simple, yet beautiful pendant from a cab, and here are five more beautiful pieces. I think, you should change your post name to "Groover" Woody

Wow! Those are great. I love that Rocky Butte, it looks like you can wear it on either side but that last Pet Wood is awesome! I love its shape and the pattern is wild.
You must have a surgeons eye to be able to cut a groove like that. WTG!

Dang Adrian, another nice set!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are all great, but I am favoring that heliotrope and Rocky butte jasper, wow!!!! I swear I don't know how you do it. We were at a show last weekend, and a man there had groove wrapped things, that he says he does by hand with a dremel, some things were so thin, like earrings, and he said he has been doing it 30 years. I really like the groove wrap, because it highlights the stones so nicely. Very Nice!

I second what sitnwrap said, there is no front or back to these stones with the way you wrap them. I keep saying I'm going to try this but never seem to get around to it. I love them so much that I will have to try it. One other benefit I see from this style of wraps is it doesn't allow much of the metal to touch a persons skin. There are people, like my mom, who are allergic to just about every metal. She doesn't have one of my cabs because of this so now I HAVE to give it a try. Great work as usual.

Hey, Mr. Groovy! These are all great, but I have to say the big one is really great. Love the shape for the size. I expect it would hang just right! I grooved 5 stones last night, including an opal.... a big opal. I have to tell you I was sweating it. I mounted my thin opal blade I got from China last week on my arbor, like you do, and went at it with abandon. Got 'em all grooved and now the test... will my wire fit... look good... and can I figure out how you hide the ends in your bails. Wish me luck! I'm trying to steal all your groovy ideas Tony

Adrian they are all really neat, I too was shocked to see the side view of the pet wood and see all the texture to it. I really thought it was smooth! I really think that night sky jasper is my favorite though. There is something very soothing about it. Fran

Thank you all again! Tony, give it a try, I'm sure you will be able to do it. Start with some not so good rocks if you are affraid to ruin the good ones. But START! Tony W, let us see your pendants, the opal must be groovy indeed Tweet and Fran, that pet wood is left rough bcause my friend wanted to be like that. Besides, I tried to polish a piece of pet wood like that and it's too soft for a good polish, at least with my technique and knowledge. Adrian

Now those are some seriously nice pendants! Wicked shine, very clean lines and beautiful cabs! Is that the half round wire you are using Adrian? I have only used round, I think I will have to get some and some square wire as well when I can afford it.

Adrian, I have read your tutorial, It is very good, great pictures. I had that idea for smoothing the wire to the level of the stone before, but never followed through. Now that I have seen how good it looks, I will have to try it. As for the methods I used on mine, I will have to take a few pictures I think. Stay tuned, may be a day or two till I can get to it.
