I seen a rock vice the other day. All the guy would say about it was, a guy out in Washington (I think) was making these. It bore a striking resemblance to a Pulley puller. So you was able to grab odd shaped rocks with out having to go to the trouble of making several cuts to get the Axis you want. So I guess I am looking for links, pictures, or plans for a rock vice's that can grab a (lets say) round rock. I found a site where a feller was gluing his rocks to a board. This scares me. I do have a slab grabber but it needs a cut surface to work properly.

Unclem, some of us still do the board gluing. No problem if its done right.I use the water glass. But need a flat surface.I reread and you want something to hold a round rock,so this probably wouldnt work for you. snuffy

forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=sawingb&action=display&thread=54193&page=1Check this post. I added the info in pdf documents so you will have to down load them. these devices are an awsome piece of equipment. The large one was grabbing a stone around 2" and an odd shape. No matter what I did I could not pull the rock from the vice. I pulled out my trusty leatherman and broke the bit off from my letherman. Very expensive items but I'm going to get one next month. Mike

Snuffy, what glue do you use for attaching rocks to wooden boards? Where do you purchase it?

Snuffy, what glue do you use for attaching rocks to wooden boards? Where do you purchase it? Mike Mike,I used Gorilla glue at first with no problem, then bought a container of water glass, shown in the photo, from Lehmans.Worked too. I just checked on Lehmans site and didnt realize the shelf life was 18 months after opening. What little I use,I'll go with gorilla glue the next time. snuffy

thanks snuffy, I've heard of people using water glass to stabilize rocks and seal crevices and cracks. You ever heard of that?

We bought out a collection 8 yrs. ago, had some waterglass in the stuff, no idea how old at that time. I shook it up to thoroughly mix it up, careful to reclose tightly, it still works fine.

Heck Mike, back in the good old days, they used water glass to fix cracked engine blocks. The also used it for long term storage of eggs, (called egg seal). No reason why it wouldn't seal cracks in rocks.

No reason why it wouldn't seal cracks in rocks. to permanently seal cracks in rocks it needs to be treated by a process that turns the sodium silicate into a kind of clear opalite. by itself it is still water soluble - not good enough Jamie posted a good recipe on RTH some years back

Thanks for those links Rich.
I'm seeing the need - after a week with my new multi-point slab grabber from Tony - for something smaller for grabbing smaller pieces. Any recommendations on where to buy those pictured in the last link? -
