I have nothing meaningful to contribute to the forum, but I thought I'd share something I found intriguing. Railroad Spike knives:

Oh I don't own them, I just found a picture randomly. I'f probably be more interested in making them than owning them.

Railroad spike knives are more of an art piece than a real knife. The steel in railroad spikes makes a sincerely miserable cutting edge (too soft!) Still the skill to produce the knife like objects is extraordinary. Very nice to see. A knifemaker Tai Goo makes awesome railroad spike art (and other knives too!!) as well.

If you like looking at this type of thing, here's a few more for your viewing pleasure. This guy had a booth set up at Tyson Wells (Quartzsite) a couple years ago. A lot of cool stuff! Bottle openers to the left, some knives made of rebar, and a modified railroad spike. Close up. Another rebar knife, and a business card holder. More knives, some from spikes. These are pretty rough compared to the polished ones John posted photos of. More rebar knives. He'll probably be there again in January.

Jean, that looks like Tai Goo's work. He lives in AZ. I can easily see him setting up there.

It took a lot of work and a buttload of talent to create those knives. Thanks for posting that.

Talking about unconventionally made knives, I saw a movie with a knife made in Damascus style, from a motocycle chain. Can't find that movie right now, but it's very cool looking.

Yes, Dave, something like that one.
There was a movie on youtube, depicting the works from start to finish.

Big knife fan here of course and I've seen a lot of that stuff at shows. Really cool art form though, as has been pointed out, not really great work knives. The damascus ( pattern welded) knife makers are really going gangbusters now too. Lots of fine working blades being made now in too many patterns to even name. Even making blades from pattern welded cable, mosaic steel blanks etc. Pakistan, where a lot of Damascus steel was created even centuries ago, has seen a huge resurgence in the industry as they make blade blanks for modern knives. Not always the greatest quality but boy some are sure pretty to look at. I'm always dragging a new one home *L* to the point where my wife is always saying, "Jeez, how many knives can you use anyway. Ya only carry one at a time." *L*....Mel

when it comes to damascus the mosaic process makes anything become a reality blanks yes, that is all various tool steels forge welded in the patterns seen. Pattern is expressed by acid etch or but caustic "rust blueing".
