My Wife Tana is absolutely awesome about my man cave, you have seen pics of my shop and I am spreading out a bit. She has her cave just outside mine for her sewing. I tried to set it up nice and convenient for her and she likes it. She still won't put my tools back where they belong but then again I put tumbles on her sewing table:) 31 years and counting!!!

I could not do what I did back then any more. Ain't it da troot. We moved here in 2000, my lungs were shot from working all those years around asbestos, and I expected to die in about 5 years. I built a 5'X 15' food pantry in the carport and was still kicking. Apple cider vinegar in glass of water every day seems to have worked. Built a 10'X 25' woodworking shop on the south side of the unattached garage-workshop out back. Built a lot of furniture etc. Still around. Built a 12'X 25' slab saw shed on the north side. Still here. Moved the woodworking shop into the garage, old wood shop is becoming a rock shop with overflow into the saw shop. Metal smithing is scattered everywhere. But I'm definitely slowing down. This half acre takes more weed pulling than I ever imagined, even after graveling most of it. Every other day now seems to be Saturday and I'm not sure if I got anything done.

Weird how asbestos wasn't lethal as we are told. Based on what I read and hear from government officials.. well you get it.
I was recently told a single particle of asbestos (even actinolite!) does cause mesothelioma. Not can cause, does cause.
Glad to have met you and that you beat the lethal pox that is asbestos for this long.

Doing labor and farm work all my life has taken a toll. The orthopedic surgeon keeps cutting on me to repair things But most of it was from injuries doing wild and crazy things. All i got to say is take care of your body and do not over do it. And for sure stay away from injuries. But my friends that sat behind a desk have issues too. How do you win?

I think getting tired and sore from doing stuff is far preferable to getting tired and sick from sloth. My high skrool class is already losing folks to heart attacks. Too many fatties! I am glad to be almost not in that category anymore. Soon I'll be able to keep up with Susan or Tim!

James, you are a marvel of human engineering. Your knowledge, skills and experience are truely remarkable. Curious George with a big brain and lots of imagination. I am sure your cave will be great. I have our basement as a hang out too, I can run the saw without causing too much noise.

Cause it was cheap. Everything is done around here w/cheap or free materials. The budget man. I will never do it again. My wife hand mixed the 60 bags of mortar and i assure you she will never do that again. We got into mortar fights. Got so good at flicking a little wad of mortar i could hit a 3 inch circle at 15 feet. She was a bigger target than that. She threw rocks back...

Yes, I was admiring the wall. Very friendly. Are you gonna clear coat it? I learned the hard way Bill about not clear coating such. It will shed sand forever. I actually pressure washed a few days ago. And yes. Absolutely. Those are all chimney rocks. They were laid with wet Georgia red clay for the mortar circa 1800-1870. That type of chimney is an art in itself. Every rock top has to slant down from the direction of the flu for rain water shed and keeping the clay dry. Most of those rocks were broken by the mason. i had that granite tested by request of my dear code inspector. It broke the concrete testing machine. Don't mess w/granite.

James, you and your wife are my heroes. So many people dream of doing what you have done. I'd say your wife married well, but then it takes a special woman to help, too. Most women don't like to get their hands dirty. (Which I find the utmost fun.) Getting land by an airport was a smart move. Here, there is a master jet base for the Navy. Years ago there were strict zoning rules, which have since relaxed at bit, much to the Navy's chagrin. If I had land near the zone line, it would be worth a fortune to developers now. I have lived near jet noise all my life. In P'cola, I lived under a landmark for the Blue Angels. They flew over, like clockwork, so low a bottle rocket would hit them. Don't ask me how I know. Here, I lived off the landing strip for the jet base, Oceana. Now THAT was loud! Blew out tv speakers in no time. Now, it is the police helicopters that annoy me. Where I live was built in the 60's when this land was boondocks landfill. It's downtown now. Unfortunately, I don't own the land. I moved around all my life and never bought a house. Military life.

Tela. I am an Atlanta home boy. I know all the tricks in this hood. Staying in one spot was fine as long as the home site could keep me entertained. As far as my dear wife, she is handy and hard worker and will/prefer to get her hands dirty. She is homey too. Gets my full respect. I am from the snotty north side and she from the lowly south side. I moved to the south side and told her i did so cause the women were easier. Ha. She has made me pay for that one. That is interesting that you have been around aerial noise. Being with military people kept you on the move. It all washes the same. You got to see so much. Now i am ready for a small lot and spend more time not doing farm chores. Sounds like you have such.

I'm jealous! I tried to get some space for myself a few years ago. Build my husband a shop for his motorcycles thinking I could take over the garage. HA! He just spread out! He now has the garage & shop. My son has the other shop for his woodwork. My craft stuff is stashed in boxes & crates in the shed & my closet. I retaliate by doing my wirework on the bed

I think there should be a 'Spouse Cave Lawyer' to settle and create equitable arrangements.
A new category of law. To make money off of us....If i find one i will post his contact info.LOL
I just edited after seeing Tela's comment. I did not even think about the bed deal. That is clever beyond my imagination. This is getting to be a dangerous subject.

The last time my husband complained that he got stuck with a piece of wire, I reminded him that I was still waiting for him to clear out at least 1/2 of the garage. Not a peep since but still no gaarage space! He says it's my fault for not anticipating he'd get a 3rd motorcycle when I build the shop with only 2 bays!
