Thanks 1nickthegreek I got a new game plan though rock wise, still gonna use herchenx grit/water formula...I've decide to just take out the aquas and emeralds.......My biggest emerald ended up having a few large cracks and one deep chip that im not sure will be able to be fixed by tumbling...too bad I don't have a saw...The aquas I've been working on forever, since Christmas..not getting far with them and not the color I expected yet and may just be too large for my 3lb barrel...im just starting to get burnt out on them so saving them for later.......Everything that's going back in is fresh pea gravel, not the stuff from my previous tumbles, im thinking its too smooth by now to have good grinding effect and the major stones are all ones I got from tony catmandewe they are all very nice looking stuff and will be a breath of fresh air, I love my emeralds and aquas but I don't want them to stress me to the point I lose the joy I get from tumbling...heres whats going back in, hopefully all the rocks will get along with eachother this time The ones that's been through a round so far Those and some complete roughs combined, hopefully giving me a full barrel I want to put these in but they seem to be too big and heavy and different material so I may hold them for later

Well heres what im working with, I may have took one or two larger stones out and sprinkled the top with more pea gravel....gripped and squeezed the barrel to see where I truly was load wise , added 4 ounces water....that's 8 tbls right? 3 tblspoons grit, I wasn't trying to make a mess so the tblspoons weren't level and lacking a little on one side on each scoop so I put in about an extra quarter tablespoon of grit...if anyone thinks this sounds wrong let me know so I can fix any problems, my grit ran out fast, I might have enough for one more round so I really want to make this round count

I just happen to have over 5 pounds of each just sitting here, I do not want you running outta grit and losing your fire. Good idea to set the aquas aside for now, wait until you have more experience under your belt and give them another shot!!!!

So just to continue with herchenx theories, I decided to start a 6 pounder of petrified wood with the exact same recipe just doubled!!! WIll check in regularly with updates, but here are the pictures. 6 pound barrel 5.125 pounds of petrified wood. In the barrel 4 Tbsp 60/90 12 Tbsp water down in there, can anyone see it? Then a couple handfuls of ceramic just to get the grit to move around better. So, I will update in 10 days with more pics, see you all then.

Hey John, I'm about as experienced as you are, but I'm still enjoying this discussion. It's fun to see other people's procedure. Are you going to do anything about the vug in the rock that is in the fourth picture from the bottom? I would cut that rock horizontally so the vug is removed. I'd be afraid to leave it because it could carry grit to later stages. I also like my rocks to be completely free of imperfections if I can (usually I don't accomplish this, but it's a goal). If you would normally leave it, I'd love to see a picture of the end result. I probably won't do anything about the vug. There is some druzy in that i might like to keep. I have a way to get these cleaned out (a dedicated 2 gallon pump sprayer with a jet stream set that can get grit out of nooks and crannies) that I use for selected stones if I really want to move them on in spite of a feature like this, but everything still needed tumbling yet so I didn't pull any out this clean out.

Nick, that tumbler looks way too full to me. How are those large pieces going to move?

Nick I think Jugglerguy is right, if that picture is accurate your barrel is completely full, so the barrel will spin but the rocks will be locked in place and wont tumble id take out about a quarter of the material

Also 1nickthegreek someone correct me if im wrong cause ive never used ceramics before but ....for your coarse stage in rotary id try to focus on all rocks, and mix up the sizes, all your stones look to be larger size, you could use more smalls atleast 25% of your load should be smalls.......if im wrong forgive me, just trying to help

Nick, that tumbler looks way too full to me. How are those large pieces going to move? I just but all the larges up top, it is actually over 25% smalls down in there lol and they move like crazy oddly enough.

I am a chronic ceramic user, I tumble obsidian 75% of the time, and they carry the grit better than anything I have found thus far. So just trying them with the pet wood as half of it is opalized and needs a little bit of buffer to not fracture, ya know what I mean?
