A symbol used as a unit of exchange. Easier to carry around than the two goats I have to trade for your pig.

The most important thing is, money is freedom. With it, you are free to do as you like within the boundaries of the law ( or if you are a Clinton, heck outside the boundaries too *L*). I suppose, if you can do without it, you can be free too but most folks want or need "stuff" and so are enslaved by the need for money as a symbol of exchange to buy their stuff or take care of their needs.....Mel

The last quote from the third set of answers I find interesting: Probably true for most earthlings, but definitely not so for billionaires. They make it the old fashioned way, they steal it. If it weren't for money, no one could be rich. Think about this. For over two thousand years a denarius (a silver coin about the size of a dime) was considered the value of a man's work for one day. With our runaway inflation, what kept it stable for so long back then? One thing I think was that there were few coins around so it was mostly book keeping, no actual coins to steal, but with the web today, not ever the books are safe.

Way back in Jolly Old England along with guineas, crowns, pounds, shillings, hardheads, and tuppence, a penny was worth a lot so making change was a problem. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Swap ya a SFRB of jasper slabs for enough coffee grounds to make 2 pots, and a can of sardines.

Few have heard of the Military Script used as pay during WWII. And even fewer have heard of the Bikini Short Snorter.I know because my first stepfather was stationed as an officer on the atoll for the 1946 testing. Not a great landing, but if you can walk away from it . . . Front Back Back Front

Hey Dave, somewhere in one of my tons of boxes, I have a few examples of the funny money (script) that we used in Vietnam. I'll see if I can find them & post a pic or 2.

The dollar is only worth something because we all believe it has a 'value'. I read a very interesting book years ago called Greenback. Makes you wonder how stable or money system is....................MrP

Whatever money is, it doesn't grow on trees. Tell that to the farmers in California. Those guys are wealthy and their wealth does indeed grow on trees.

Seems that when I was in high school, there was a song called The Money Tree; a jazzy little tune. Don't remember the singer
