Red seems to be tricky colour to classify. Maroon red and other reddish colours are rather common, true red on the other hand is a different matter....

I'm just in the newbie stage of working "Fire" agate...A few pieces have touched the wheels, but none of it is finished...LOL Hard stuff to work and the fire can burn out fast....Still learning though...Thumbs up Just got a hand full of green from a friend of mine, its got great fire in it too... The photos and details I see on the material here, are so killer cool....Nice material to have fun with for sure!!! A great post......

Lovely material you got there. Done on the wheels? or foredom combo? All three are quick to finish, once you set your mind on a final shape.

I have a question for you FA specialist... I have several I'd love to play with. It doesn't seem like if you really wanted to display all the bumpy layers properly, you couldn't do it on wheels... my question is... when using your Foredom, what burs or polishers do you use??

Everyone has his own preferences. I use cheap Chinese burs followed by SIC paper and 14K+50k Diamond paste. But I know several people who go as far as making their own specialized burs to do the job.
There should be several videos somewhere from Christopher, showing the process. So you can see how he applies the material.

Thanks Don for your well thought out tutorial. Using burs made of 1/8" hardwood dowels with diamond paste, covering surface with a sharpy to keep track of where you have polished and where you haven't. Good photos to show the progress. Thanks again!

Great tute Don! That's essentially the procedure I use when carving botryoidal stones. I've found the products sold by Mt. Mist very helpful also, especially the sintered burs and their Super Polish www.mtmist.org/products/super.htmlCutting fire agate isn't for the impatient or faint of heart. But once you start it can become an obsession. For those who really wish to get serious about it, the gem carving books by Henry Hunt can be great idea-starters for both FA and gem carving in general. The titles are "American Lapidary: Designing the Carved Gemstone;" and "Lapidary Carving for Creative Jewelry." Last I checked they're still in print.

Wow, I had no idea they'd gone up so much in price. Looks like I have a small gold mine on my bookshelves with those and all my other out-of-print lapidary and smithing books. But I suspect my signed copy of Richard Hughes' "Ruby & Sapphire" has lost value since the new edition was published. Abe now lists it for only around $600 a copy.

If someone REALLY wants it, cheap at twice the price - as the saying goes.

As I will be leaving the internet for an extended weekend up at the cabin (can check in but not upload), let me leave you with one more piece for the weekend. I obviously I like FA, but I like better when I can utilize the material around the FA too. Always on the lookout for it, and cant understand why nearly everyone completely ignores wonderful material and cuts it off, just to get a relatively minute section of the whole. As of August 1992 Fire agate became listed on the precious gem list. Thanks again Tiffany, Holding out tell the 7th vote.
