Scarfed from the video. The intriguing thing about fire agate is the way the play of colors shifts.

I have a question for you FA specialist... I have several I'd love to play with. It doesn't seem like if you really wanted to display all the bumpy layers properly, you couldn't do it on wheels... my question is... when using your Foredom, what burs or polishers do you use?? www.dlcgems.com/blog/dlc-gems-fire-agate-carving-tutorialLove your tutorial and have bookmarked it. Question-once you have removed the chalcedony and are ready to begin the polishing process. Can this go in a vibe tumbler at this point? My Lot-O doesn't take off material like a rotary does. Seems like it would be a quicker way of getting it to the polish point.

fantastic5 , that's the way I do a lot of mine. I had to experiment a bit to arrive at the right size mix of other stones in order to polish all the nooks and crannies of FA preforms. It's important to have lots of tiny stones in the batch. I use an old Minisonic that was purchased before Diamond Pacific acquired the line. I assume the principles are the same for a LotO but I've never seen or used one. Some FA's are so bubbly or have such thin color layers it's best to do them entirely by hand; I've ruined some fine stones by having too much material removed in tumbling even though I usually start with the equivalent of 800 grit.

I would worry about not having direct control over the material removal though as the layers can be extremely thin.

Gone quiet around here. Here an old new one. Gave up on that one last year, and reworking it now. Not done yet. Both ends need more work. I'm on 600grid paper, no polish and dry as of yesterday. While it has no commercial colours, I do like its brightness and changing shades with every change of light source. A couple of older pieces: Fire Agate by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr magi outdoor Fire Agate Southern Magi by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr better by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Have a great week, Kurt

I'm with you Kurt, I like some of the chalcedony left on, too. Makes a more interesting piece, I think. Of course, if you are cutting one for something specific, like a ring, that's different.

While it has no commercial colours, I do like its brightness and changing shades with every change of light source. It is coming along nicely. I agree, that it has it's own beauty irregardless of the lack of intense fire. Two of the three images look like a seahorse to me.
