I'm not too picky when it comes to colour. For me its more about the fun to explore. Still working on that one, sure not worth financially, but..... Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr For me, any colour will do, as long as its bright and can be seen without specific light-conditions. Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate Dragon 2 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr And of course, I like it when shapes resemble something Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr At times combos come to mind. And at times, its hard to find someone to realize ideas. Its been 3 years that I'm looking for someone who could give me a proposal as to how to finish this piece securely with minimal metal. b2 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Have a great weekend, Kurt

Yeah, ammolite is what most people think of that are unaware of FA. True, a lot of pieces are rather dark and dissapoint after seeing the vivid colours in pictures. But, don't have to be. There are extremely bright vivid colours out there that can be seen at any time anywhere, but those are rare and gives the material its value (thats where the comparison with diamonds comes in when relating to how much rarer FA is). In Quartzite I have looked at hundreds of finished pieces of fire agate. I have never seen a piece like Dons. Diamonds are way more common. Diamonds are not rare at all. They've been controlled by a cartel for the last 100 years to set prices. They are so many diamonds they have to hold a lot back to keep the prices artificially high. The story of diamonds in the last century is interesting, bloody and greedy. Fire agate is far rarer, yet I got a small piece I made into a ring for $5 recently. Zircon is 1,000 times rare than diamonds, as are lot of other stones that aren't seen as valuable. I have a few pieces of FA that I collected at Saddle Mountain but I can never photograph them properly. I also have a beauty that someone gave me, probably Deer Creek. I am terrified to try and bring out the color by sanding down my collected pieces. It's a true art. I made this little sterling ring from the $5 piece of FA. The entire thing has the boytroidal (sp?) formations and color all the way down, but the camera couldn't pick it all up.

As usual, late to the party. Spectacular stones y'all. I have just dabbled, destroyed and finished one so far. Not that I am slow but about four years ago when I was in Q I was invited by Tony to go hounding for fire agates with him and friends. The morning we were supposed to go I had to pass because of back pain. Tony, the peach of humanity, gave me a sack of rough that he had picked up that day. Off and on, mostly off because of location to cut being scarce, I have played around with some with little success. It taught me the fact that y'all who turn out the gorgeous stones are patient and very skilled. Here is the one that I finished, not much. This one, bad photo, I can not remember where I got it but my part is just the wrap. Thank y'all for taking the time to show your stuff. Jim

Are these but points what's needed to bring out the fire in fire agate? I bought one that had some pits that I have ground out and is now a calibrated size. It seems to have plenty of fire and even more pin fire using my cabking (I have read use a Drexel? True?) anyways it has three of the flower like sprays like the bottom one does I guess from Germany. I stopped if I set it I can clearly see these but being as green at fire agate as I am at tumbling I stopped trying to bring out anymore color in the fire agate. I end up going to deep and loose a lot of fire when I polish the stone. I will see if I can get a good picture to put up. I would like any information on polishing fire agate I have a little over a pound to play with. Thanks for reading
