Hi gang, I've been reading some of the postings about gas build up in the tumbler. You can throw in a couple of Tum's when you charge the tumbler and you won't have any gas. You can also put a little baking soda in instead of the Tum's Tom

Baking soda??? No way! Somebody here has already described his experience with baking soda. It wasn't pretty.
I eliminate the gas by washing my rocks in either Ivory shavings or Cascade for a couple of hours. I don't know for sure if this is what eliminates the gas, but I have never had to "burp" a barrel since I started doing this. Even if I did, I would just stick with burping the barrel rather than adding anything - just heard too many stories about big messes as a result of this or that added. Whole lot easier to burp a barrel that clean up a mess! Esp. since my job is cleaning up messes! Sure don't want one at home I have to clean up! ;D

Hi Tom. As I understand it, not all rocks will cause a gas build-up. If you gather rocks from a beach, you may end up with some peices of bone, which as they wear down, will release gases. I believe some Jaspers will also release gas. But the best thing to do is to watch the bottom of the barrel a day or 2 after you begin a new batch. If it is bulging out, just pop the lid and release the gas. After the coarse grind, you won't have to worry about a gas build-up, because you're not removing much material any more, just polishing out the scratches. Hope this helps.

ok, maybe i am compulsive-obsessive or something, but my tumbling first instruction book, basically said to check first grinds everyday to release gas, higher steps not as often but at least ever 2-3 days.......
maybe i is my water, but i have bubbles......the mules (borax) help a lot!
i shake, i stir, KD

Using the borax as an example, how much do you put in a 1.5 lb or 3 lb barrel?

Rosebud, I typically use 1 tablespoon in a 1.5 and about 2 in a 3 lb. No science with the Borax. My hubby just puts some in, no measuring at all. By the way, for anyone that might be interested, I found out why it's called 20-mule team Borax. Borax, I guess is a mineral. They use to mine it from Death Valley, and (way back when) they loaded it on wagons and drove them out with 20-mule teams. There's a bit of trivia for ya!

Hey Sherry, some of us used to watch "Death Valley Days" on TV. It was hosted by Ronald Reagan and the sponser was "20 Mule Team Borax".

the very first TV my dad brought home was a used black and white number that you had to change channels with a pair of pliers and you added aluminium foil to the rabbit ears to "improve" the reception........ahahahhaha..
i still prefer Doc's version of 20 Mule teams with Flicka waiting, KD

WOW,,,,,,Never expected that kind of responce!!!LOL
From what I understand the older unlined barrels had more of a gas problem then the new rubber ones.I don't know why but I read it somewhere.
Yes there ARE some materials that seem to give off more gas then others and boy does it ever stink.I also read that it can be explosive if there is something to set it off.A match,cig.lighter,etc.
As for the baking soda or Tums,,,,when I first started I added way too much and DID have a BIG mess to clean up but now I use either of them all the time and have had no problems.I "think" whoever had probs must have added way too much which WILL expand and with a Lortone type seal will blow the lid right off.The model B Thumler's have the wing nuts so the lid won't blow off but when you open it ,,,,look out!!!
So much for gas,,,,,,
I loved watching Death Valley Days when I was a kid.Howdy Doody and Clarabelle,,Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring,,,Buffalo Bob,,,Phineous T Bluster,,Winky Dink and You,,,,,Flub-A-Dub,,,,and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I think the world was a much better place with TV shows like that then the garbage that's on today. This "Reality" crap is just that,,,,,crap,,,and the cartoons today are nothing but sensationalism and violence.
My opinion,,,,,,,,

Thanks for the amounts on the borax. My rock tumbling excel file is getting bigger by the day.
Hey Tom, I totally agree with you.

I'm trying Llanas trick and using Cacade. I burnished before polish with it and added Cascade and borax (small amounts of each but no measuring) into the polish. I'll let you know how it does. The sodalite seemed to have some gas, but I recharge every day anyway with the vibe.

I hear ya John. The cartoons of today don't hold a candle to the old Looney Tunes. And they say the Looney Tunes was too violent. Horse manure if you ask me.

Okay, you guys might find this weird, but I still HAVE the old (1955) B&W Sylvania TV I watched as a kid and it still works. Then in 1959 my father bought a color console TV, and yes, I still have that too! Sunday nights; Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color and Bonanza.
Later, Ed-weirdo(that's what my sister-in-law calls me)

Then there was this Amos and Andy bit about "The Shadow" Andy: Who know what evil lurk in da heart of men? Amos: Da Shadow do!
We got a color TV right before Apollo landed on the moon. Mom and dad woke us up in the middle of the night to watch, had a big impact on my brother and me. In stead of making play houses out of cardboard boxes we made lunar modules!
